Edgar Bullard Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 19, 2012.

Edgar R. Bullard, 87, Reading, died Nov. 16, 2012, after a lengthy illness. He was born July 5, 1925, in Corning, Arkansas, a son of the late William and Viola (Johnson) Bullard.
He married Rosemary Broderick of Brooklyn, New York, in 1946. Together they raised five children.

He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII as a submariner aboard the U.S.S. Croaker, earning decorations for participating in a successful war patrol and participating in the Liberation of the Philippines.

After the war he moved to New York. During the 1950s he worked as a civilian contractor in Thule, Greenland, on Operation Blue Jay, a Cold War missile defense system.

During the 1960s he worked as payroll manager for Raymond International, a civil engineering and construction firm, before moving to Pennsylvania where he worked in the accounting department of Gilbert Associates until his retirement in 1987.

He was a loving husband and devoted father who enjoyed travel, gardening, country music, and volunteering in his church.

His quiet, easygoing manner and always-neat appearance belied a sometimes-outrageous sense of humor. When asked once about how he wanted to be buried, he said that he'd like to be shot out of a torpedo tube. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew him.

He was predeceased by his wife, Rosemary, in 2009.

He is survived by his daughter, Judith, Allentown; sons: Gerard and his wife, Cathy, St. Paul, Minn; Edward and his wife, Patricia, Bechtelsville; David, Reading; and Donald and his wife, Beth, Mount Joy.

He is also survived by grandchildren: Adrian Crowe, Shannon, Michael, and Elizabeth Bullard, Robert Bullard, Peter Bullard, and Cecilia Bullard; and great-grandson Nicholas Mellen.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 10 to 10:30 a.m. in St. Ignatius Loyola Church, 2810 St. Alban's Drive, Sinking Spring, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary's Church Cemetery, Hamburg.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Breadline of the Poor, St. Francis Catholic Church, 135 W. 31st St., New York, NY 10001.

To all my Bullard cousins,
I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your father. He was such a kind gentle man. I remember fondly our trips to visit you guys...one time in particular stands out in my memory. Your father was waiting on a hilltop on the side of the highway, waving to us. I know he is happily reunited with your mom & my parents in Heaven. May he rest in peace.

Bullard Family-So sorry for your loss. I worked with Ed at Gilberts and he was one of those people to leave a lasting impression. I remember his life lessons and stories well. He was a great guy, with, yes, a great sense of humor.
