DIEHL, Edward Lewis, 91, of Cambridge, MA, died peacefully at home on May 29, 2014, surrounded by his family. He was born in York, PA, the son of George and Anna Marie (Wellman) Diehl, and brother of Dorothy D. Reck. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, LoisMary M. Diehl, his daughter Sarah T. Diehl of Cambridge, MA, and was predeceased by his son, Dr. Jonathan E. Diehl of Weston, MA. Edward also leaves behind his daughter-in-law, Suzanne W. Diehl of Weston, MA, grandsons Brooks W. He was born in York, PA, the son of George and Anna Marie (Wellman) Diehl, and brother of Dorothy D. Reck. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, LoisMary M. Diehl, his daughter Sarah T. Diehl of Cambridge, MA, and was predeceased by his son, Dr. Jonathan E. Diehl of Weston, MA.

Edward also leaves behind his daughter-in-law, Suzanne W. Diehl of Weston, MA, grandsons Brooks W. Diehl (and fiancée Mika Strickler) of Abuja, Nigeria, and SeanPaul E. Jones (and wife Lynn Jones) of Medford, MA, and granddaughter Anne M. Diehl of Baltimore, MD.

Edward, an Eagle Scout, graduated from York High School in 1941, received his Bachelors of Science from Lehigh University in 1944 (a member of Sigma Chi), and received a Master of Science in Engineering in 1947 and a Master of Architecture in 1949, both from Harvard University.

Edward served in the United States Army during World War II as a Second Lieutenant, after completing Officer Training School, and was awarded a Purple Heart. After completing his graduate education, Edward accepted a position at the architecture firm of Walter Gropius as a member of The Architects' Collaborative (TAC). Edward's most notable work was his contributions to the design of Tech Built homes.

In 1952, Edward established his own firm, Edward L. Diehl Associates, in Cambridge, MA. He designed buildings for Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, MA, and The Cotting School in Lexington, MA. Edward and Benjamin Thompson together created the plans for the redesign of the Inner Harbor Development in Baltimore, MD and of the Faneuil Hall Market in Boston, MA.

Edward will be remembered for his quiet wit and love of books, art, and travel.

His memorial will be held on Saturday, June 7 at 11:00 AM in Appleton Chapel, Memorial Church of Harvard University, One Harvard Yard, Cambridge, MA.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Perkins School for the Blind (175 North Beacon St., Watertown, MA, 02472) or The Cotting School (453 Concord Ave, Lexington, MA, 02421).
