Ed was born in Shelton, Washington to Robert Hart and Mildred Pauline (Stoick) Keenan. He earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees majoring in Biology at Creighton University. He received his Ph.D degree in Pharmacology from the West Virginia University School of Medicine where he studied the androgen regulation of cell growth and androgen dependence of prostate cancer.

Dr. Keenan joined the faculty of the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in 1975. In addition to his teaching, service and scholarly responsibilities as a faculty member in the School of Medicine, Dr. Keenan created the Hormone Receptor Laboratory in 1976. He then served as Director of this nationally recognized breast cancer diagnostics laboratory until 1994 when he was appointed the Associate Dean for Medical Education in the School of Medicine at OHSU.

Dr. Keenan served as the Associate Dean for Medical Education at OHSU until he was appointed President of The Foundation for Medical Excellence (TFME) in 2008. His administrative leadership responsibilities as Associate Dean included medical school admissions, the MD cirriculum as well as directing medical student support services including teaching services, the scholarship endowment, student advising and the MD/Ph.D Scholars program. In 1997, he introduced holistic admissions to the MD program at OHSU creating a unique approach that highly values the non-cognitive attributes of applicants as well as their academic achievements in the selection process. An additional priority for Dr. Keenan was to reemphasize the importance of medical professionalism through cirriculum development and by establishing ceremonial traditions like the white coat ceremony at OHSu.

In 2008, Dr. Keenan was appointed President of The Foundation for Medical Excellence (TFME) in Portland, Oregon. TFME is a unique, non-profit entity established in 1984 and dedicated to promoting excellence in medicine, improving the quality of healthcare and advancing sound health policy through education programs, collaborative initiatives, research and the TFME John Kitzhaber MD Health Policy program.

Ed had been married to Shelley (Hall) Keenan since 1982 and was blessed with a son Alex. Ed enjoyed his family, snow skiing, recreational boating, gourmet cooking, wine tasting, yard work and reading.

A good friend commented that it is hard to succinctly summarize such a person as Ed. Always, the most important things, those of the heart, are not captured. And Ed was a man of heart. A big heart. He spent his life in research sorting out complex relationships with hormones and cancer, and he worked hard for excellence in medical education, but in the end, he was always trying to get to the heart of things and to communicate that to other peoples' hearts. He will be dearly missed by his loving family and devoted friends.

He leaves behind his wife of almost 32 years, his son Alex, his sister Mary Ann Powers and his brother Mick Keenan.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, August 20, 2014 in the Chapel at Finley Sunset Hills Mortuary. 6801 SW Sunset Highway, Portland, OR. 97225. GPS Directions: 1950 SW Camelot Court. From downtown take Highway 26 to Exit 71A. Keep left and merge onto OR-8/Canyon Road. First Light turn right onto Camelot Court.
