Edward Joseph "Coach" Messbarger of San Angelo, former basketball coach at Angelo State University, St. Mary's University, University of Dallas and Benedictine Heights College, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, June 30, 2014, at the age of 81. Ed was born in Parnell, Missouri, on July 26, 1932, to the late Fred and Anna O'Day Messbarger. He graduated from Northwest Missouri State University and received his master's degree from Northern Colorado University. During college he was called into the military and served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Wasp during the Korean War. He began his teaching/coaching career at Fillmore High School in Fillmore, Missouri, where he coached all sports, both men and women and was the school principal. After one year he was offered the job as men's basketball coach at Benedictine Heights College in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Although he had played a lot more football than basketball in high school and college, he took the men's basketball coaching job and never looked back. Coach Messbarger was a member of the ASU Athletics Hall of Honor, LSC Coach of the Year in 1984 and 1988, and at the time of his retirement ranked third in Division II career wins with 665 wins and was 2nd all-time in coaching appearances at any level of play. He was also a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame as well as university halls of fame at St. Mary's and Northwest Missouri State and was enshrined in the LSC Hall of Honor. Ed had an extended family of players over the years who called him "Coach" but knew him like a father which he considered one of his life's greatest blessings. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Loretta Hager and Geraldine Morris; brothers and sister-in-law, John and Helen Messbarger and Paul Messbarger; and sisters-in-law Lorene and Ronnie Messbarger. Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 53 years, Jane; son Edward Messbarger Jr. and his wife, Rita, of Laguna Vista, Texas; daughters Tisha Beck and her husband, Kyle, and Monica McNitzky and her husband, Richard, both of San Antonio, Texas; grandchildren Adrian Messbarger Gonzalez and her husband, Bauldel, Shanna, Alex and Edward Messbarger III, Madeline, Anna and Jane Beck and R.J. and Catherine McNitzky; great-grandchildren Mateo and Sirena Gonzalez; brothers Francis, Gerald and his wife, Sally, Charles and his wife, Judy, and Richard and his wife, Sandra; sister-in-law Pat Messbarger; brothers-in-law Clarence Hager and Bud Morris; and numerous nieces and nephews. Recitation of the rosary will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, 2014, in Johnson's Funeral Home chapel with visitation to follow until 9 p.m., where the family will receive friends in the family room. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 3, 2014, at Holy Angels Catholic Church, followed by inurnment in the parish columbarium. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions in his name to Angelo State University Athletics Foundation, ASU Station #11023, San Angelo, TX 76909-1023; or to Holy Angels Catholic Church, 2202 Rutgers St., San Angelo, TX 76904.
