Edward Mueller Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 12, 2014.

Edward Albert Mueller passed away on April 11, 2014 after a brief illness. He was 90 years young. Born in Madison, WI, he was educated at Wisconsin and Notre Dame for his bachelor’s degree and Catholic University for Masters in Civil Engineering. He lived in Wisconsin most of his younger years and in Jacksonville for the last 41. In his career he has worked for the Highway Research Board in Washington D.C., the Department of Transportation in Tallahassee. He also was the secretary of transportation from 1970-1973 and the director of the Jacksonville Transportation Authority form 1973-1981. He then worked for Morales and Shumer, an engineering firm, until he retired in 1997. Edward was a retired Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy. He actively served from 1943-1945 and then in the Naval Reserves for about 20 years.

Over the years Edward was very active in the Lutheran church. He had so many interests and hobbies, but his favorites were the Maritime Museum in Jacksonville, the local Lions club and merchant marines. He was an avid sport fan especially when it came to Wisconsin, Notre Dame and University of Florida.  Ed’s real love was history, particularly steamboats and research.  He has written several books and produced many DVD’s on the subject.

Ed is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret “Peg” Mueller; son, Lynn Mueller (Norma); daughter, Karen Myers (Tim); grandson, Danny Mueller (Alicia); granddaughter, Melissa Moore (Matt); and three great grandchildren, Mason, Jaxson, and Elizabeth.

It is truly hard to believe that Ed Mueller has been gone from our lives for five years now. His knowledge of all things steamboat, his philanthropy, his love of family, and his joy in all things maritime remains an inspiration. What some people may not know is that in addition to Ed's books about steamboats, Ed's knowledge and fame lives on in the only steamship model he ever built over 60 years ago - a model of the great British steamship, the SS Great Eastern ( a model beautifully restored in 2013 under Ed's direction by Barry Kryspin.) Following Ed's passing, I convinced the staff of the Mariners Museum in Newport News, VA to add Ed's model to its amazing collection. Almost immediately MM staff came to Jacksonville and the Jacksonville Maritime Heritage Center (closed in October 2015) and retrieved the model. They were overjoyed in the acquisition. Ed Mueller lives!

As a student of Steamboats, I met Ed at a Historical Society meeting where Ed was the guest speaker. I had been researching Steamboats in my youth and enjoy chatting with Ed after the meeting and purchased one of his book and he signed it. His books will live on as I've just placed them on a Facebook page for Florida's Pioneering families. Ed maybe gone but I will always remember him as a fellow author.

I am so sad to hear this news. Ed was a wonderful man. I only knew him the last few years, but he was always my favorite guy that the Maritime Museum. Ed always gave of himself and volunteered all the time at the museum. He will be missed.

Ed was a very interesting & dedicated gentleman. As a fellow former Civil Engineer I enjoyed getting to know him through a mutual love of history & tapping him for knowledge during the Maple Leaf excavation project & when I was working on the subsequent Maple Leaf book. I also enjoyed Ed's own books & conferring with him on Jacksonville's own maritime history during the earlier years of the Mandarin Historical Society.

Ed was The expert on steamboats and everything nautical. For years he helped sort books for the Friends of the Jacksonville Public Library. I would watch for books about ships for him and he would do the same for me for history and genealogy. I would also see him at meetings of the Jacksonville Historical Society and the Southern Genealogist's Exchange Society. Every time I look at the books he authored on my book shelves I will think of him.

Ed Mueller was the heart and soul of the Jacksonville Maritime Heritage Center (aka the Jacksonville Maritime Museum) for many, many years. We in the JMMS family have been so very fortunate to have known Ed, worked beside him, and learned from him. Though he may be gone, he will never be forgotten. Thanks Mueller family for sharing Ed with us!

What a privilege to have known and worked with Ed. I first met him in 1985 at Morales and Shumer Engineers. One day he noticed a pencil drawing of the famous yacht "America" that I had done, and asked if had ever drawn a steamboat? I said no, and he asked if I would like to try one, and I said "sure". So more than 50 drawings later, and most published in many of his books, I guess he felt the answer was 'yes'.

On behalf of the Florida Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers, of which Ed was the first President, in 1960, our sincere condolences to Ed's family and friends. He was a true leader in our profession, and made many contributions to transportation in Florida. He will be missed.

On behalf of The Southern Genealogist's Exchange Society, Inc.(SGES) we want to express our joint sympathies to all of the family. Many of our members knew Ed personally and will miss him greatly. He added both to the local history and the family history of our community. We are grateful for the many occasions throughout the years, he spoke at our meetings. He leaves a legacy to be remembered.
With respect,
Elizabeth "Betty" Poag Reed

I am thankful for Ed in so many ways. He introduced me to steamboats, graciously published my drawings in his books, and introduced me to the Maritime Museum. As well, he was a former co-worker. I truly consider it an honor to have met, worked with, and been a very small part of Ed's life.

Rest in Peace my friend.

Ed and I were "long-distance" friends for many years, sharing a passion for Ocklawaha River steamboats. No one knew more about their history than he, and he was generous in supporting my research in so many ways. The opportunities to share ideas is gone now, but the memories of our discussions past will never leave me. We are all so fortunate that Ed left us so many books which record his knowledge about Florida's maritime heritage for the benefit of future generations.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Ed's family. What a great man Ed was. I am so glad to have known him, full of so much historical knowledge. It's wonderful he has left so much of it behind with his writings, a part of him that lives on.
