EDWARD DALE SMITH, 84 of Mt. Vernon, IL, formerly of Johnsonville, IL passed away 12:30AM Thursday, February 13, 2014 at Crossroads Hospital in Mt. Vernon, IL.
Dale was born February 10, 1930 to Homer and Lillian (Trotter) Smith in Paxton, IL. He married Correna Rich on November 18, 1953 at Sims, IL and she survives.
Dale served as a Sergeant in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He served as deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and teacher at Ellis Mound Missionary Baptist Church at Wayne City, IL. He was a charter member of the Johnsonville Ruritan Club. He was a rural mail carrier for Cisne and Johnsonville for almost forty years. He also served as president and vice-president of Baltimore Cemetery Association at Wayne City, IL.
Dale is survived by his wife Correna of Mt. Vernon, IL and five children – Michael Dale (Sheila) Smith of Woodlawn, IL; Mark Edward (Renee) Smith of Olney, IL; Monty Joe (Denise) Smith of Fairfield, IL; Marlena "Susy" (Terry) Krutsinger, of Bluford, IL and Marty Lyn (Pam) Smith of Geff, IL and one sister Gnell Wood of Mt. Vernon, IL. Nineteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren also survive.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Paul, one sister Joyce and one son Murry.
The funeral will be 2:00PM Sunday, February 16, 2014 at the Ellis Mound Missionary Baptist Church. Visitation will be 5-8PM Saturday, February 15, 2014 at the church. Directions to the church is 3 miles south of Interstate 64 at the Wayne City exit then 3.5 miles down the Aden Road. Burial will be at the Baltimore Cemetery at Wayne City, IL. Full military rites will be at the graveside.
Memorials may be given to Ellis Mound Missionary Baptist Church and will be accepted at the church or at Hosselton Funeral Home.

I meet Dale while serving with the Johnsonville ruritans. He was a kind and gental man always willing to help other people. It is with a true sense of loss that I learned of his passing. He will be remembered and missed in the Johnsonville area for years to come.----------Bill Henson

Correna, So sorry to hear of Dale's passing. I didn't realize that you had moved to Mt. Vernon. I miss seeing you both come to Clay County Hospital. My prayers are with you and your family.
