Edward "Ed" P. Soares, age 83, of New Bedford, passed away, Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Mary Lou (Teixeira) Soares, with whom he shared 59 years of marriage.
Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Joseph and Maria (Furtado) Soares. He was a life-long resident of the area. Mr. Soares graduated from New Bedford High School in 1947 and served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict, from 1951-1953. He was a recipient of a Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal.
Ed was a very hard worker; he was a Conductor for the New Haven Railroad for eleven years and was a Shop Foreman at Cape News Co. for over twenty years before retiring. He was a board and life member of the VFW Post #7239 in Acushnet. He was a coach for Greater New Bedford Little League and was an avid Yankee fan, watching many games wearing his special sweatshirt. Ed was also a gardener, who was known for his "green thumb".
He loved being with his family and was especially close to his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Besides his wife he is survived by his children, Mark E. Soares and his wife Sandy of Centerville, Katherine Jeronimo and her husband Steven of Acushnet, Kevin Soares of New Bedford and Edward Soares and his girlfriend Valerie Parent of Acushnet; three sisters, Dorothy Pragana of New Bedford, Izaura Pimentel of Dartmouth and Alice Costa and her husband Leslie also of Dartmouth; brother-in-law, Antone Oliveira; eight grandchildren, Amy, Paul, Leigh, David, Thomas, Meghan, Heather and Jessica and three great grandchildren, Madison, Emily and Aubrie, with two additional great grandchildren on the way.
He is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews and was the brother of the late Joseph Jr., Gilbert, Mary Pimentel and Linda Oliveira.
His funeral will be held Monday, October 21, 2013 at 8:30 AM from the ROCK Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford, followed by his funeral mass at 9:30 AM in St. Mary's Church, Tarkiln Hill Rd., New Bedford. Visiting hours, Sunday 4-7 PM. Burial with military honors will be in Pine Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions in his honor may be made to Community Nurse and Hospice Care, P.O. Box 751, Fairhaven, MA 02719.
