Elbert Leroy Duckworth, 88, of Morganton, NC passed away Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013 at Burke Palliative Care. Born March 24, 1925, in Glen Alpine, he was the son of Dolphus M. Duckworth and Hattie Gurley Duckworth. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred Deaton Duckworth, step-son Jimmy Steele, five sisters; Mattie Roper, Mary Smith, Annie Denton, Minnie Duckworth, Ruth Jordan and three brothers; Frank Duckworth, Fred Duckworth and Charles Duckworth. Elbert Leroy Duckworth, 88, of Morganton, NC passed away Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013 at Burke Palliative Care.
Born March 24, 1925, in Glen Alpine, he was the son of Dolphus M. Duckworth and Hattie Gurley Duckworth.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred Deaton Duckworth, step-son Jimmy Steele, five sisters; Mattie Roper, Mary Smith, Annie Denton, Minnie Duckworth, Ruth Jordan and three brothers; Frank Duckworth, Fred Duckworth and Charles Duckworth.
A member of Hopewell Baptist Church, he spent the majority of his career in the lumber industry working for Pitts Lumber Co, C.G. Fox Lumber Co., and Shook Builders Supply. He was educated in the Glen Alpine school system. A veteran of the US Navy, he served on the light cruiser, USS Biloxi, during World War II. The Biloxi fought in the battles of Iwo Jima, Okinawa and Leyte Gulf. He also was an avid Atlanta Braves and local high school football fan.
Mr. Duckworth is survived by his wife, Peggy Steele Duckworth of the home; two daughters, Becky (Robert) Craig of Newton, Sue (Kenny) Eggers of Hickory; a step-daughter, Carole (Harold) Daves of Morganton; two sons, Bob (Gaye) Duckworth of Hickory, Jerry (Lori) Duckworth of Hickory; 10 grandchildren: Melissa (Kevin) Biggs of Hickory, Dr. Meredith (Matt) Taylor of Fuquay-Varina, Erin Duckworth of Hickory, Jaime (Dennis) Mack of Fort Riley, Kansas, Jason Duckworth of Conover, Ben (April) Eggers of Hickory, Reverend Rob Craig of Kings Mountain, Michelle (Alan) Clark of Morganton, Betsy Steele of Morganton, Michael (Daphne) Steele of Morganton and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, Sept. 24th at Kirksey Funeral Home, Morganton from 6-8 pm.
Revs. Danny Emory and Homer Murdock will conduct the funeral service at Hopewell Baptist Church, Morganton, NC, Wednesday, Sept. 25th at 11 AM.
Burial will be at 2:45 PM, Wednesday, Sept. 25th at Catawba Memorial Park, Hickory, NC with full military rites.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his honor to Hopewell Baptist Church, 1112 Hopewell Rd., Morganton, NC 28655.
