Jones, Eleanor L., 96, passed away July 4, 2014, born in Pettis County, Missouri. She spent the majority of her life in Florida. As a young woman, Eleanor, became the first female radio broadcast engineer for CBS radio in Chicago. During WW II, Eleanor applied and obtained an Ensign Commission in the first WAVE Officer Class of the U.S. Navy. She was assigned to BuShips in Washington, D.C. until the war ended. Eleanor married Floyd E. Lewis who preceded her in death.
In 1974, Eleanor was living in Miami and studying for the CCIM designation in commercial real estate. She met many friends from Florida at the conventions and it was there that she met her future husband, Robert B. Jones, who was the President of the Florida CCIM Group at the time. They were married in November 1978. Mrs. Jones soon joined the Belleair Country Club where her husband was one of the original founding members.
The newlyweds Jones were immediately active in Club affairs, i.e. Chairmen of Member-Guest and active on the Entertainment Committee for almost 20 years. Mr. Jones preceded her in death in 2002; but Mrs. Jones had fond memories of their wonderful times together at the Club.
Mrs. Jones was an avid golfer and won several Club Championships during her golden years. She stared playing golf professionally at the age of 29 and was Club Champion at Dayton Country Club in Ohio three years in a row, and Runner-Up of the Club Championship at La Gorce Country Club of Miami in 1973.
Mrs. Jones loved Ikebana flower arranging and had high degrees in the Ohara schools of Ikebana.
Mrs. Jones is survived by her son Michael (Karen) Lewis, Gastonia, N.C., grandchildren Jennie Lewis, Brooklyn, N.Y., Thomas (Mallary) Lewis, Gastonia, N.C., and longtime friends Stanley and Magda Sarnicki of Largo, Florida, and many other cherished friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Largo Cultural Center, 105 Central Park Dr., Largo, FL 33771, Francis Wilson Playhouse, 302 Seminole St.,, Clearwater, FL 33775 or or Suncoast Hospice, 5771 Roosevelt Bvd., Clearwater, FL 33760.
