Eleanor McConville. Passed peacefully on December 21, 2011. Beloved wife of the late Joseph E and loving mother of the late Joseph A. Eleanor was born on August 26, 1917 in Mount Vernon, N.Y, the first child of the late Hon Ralph and Pauline Carretta . She was raised there as the adoring older sister of the late Ralph Carretta, Jr. She graduated from Bucknell University in 1939 with a degree in Social Work. After graduation, she became a case worker for the Muncy Women's Prision where she learned compassion and understanding which followed her throughout her life. Eleanor met her husband Joe in New York in 1941. Joe worked internationally for Columbia Pictures. After a whirlwind courtship, they married on August 8, 1941 and set sail that evening for Buenos Aires, Argentina. Over the next 35 years they moved progressively to Montivideo, where son Joey was born in 1945, Santiago, Rio di Janero, and Mexico City. Eleanor entertained film luminaries and dignitaries, but her favorites were always her "boys", servicemen far from home needing a little TLC. Their life was magical, until the tragic accident that took their beloved son, Joey, in 1967. From that time on, she poured her endless energy into volunteer work and lending an always open hand anywhere she saw the need. She became Aunt Eleanor to everyone she met. In 1978 they retired to Sarasota, Florida, where they lived until Eleanor moved to Bloomfield in 2006 to be close to family. Eleanor is pre-deceased by her sister-in-law Janet (Mario) Garcia. She is survived by her loving sister-in-law Katherine A Carretta of Bloomfield Hills, MI, brother-in-law Donald McConville of New York City, nieces Ruth (Carlos Salamanca) Carretta, Joyce (Sean) Kashawlic, Carol (Steve) Phalen , great nephew Bryan (Patricia) Kashawlic and great nieces Erin Kashawlic, Nicole, Casey, Rachel and Amy Phalen. Visitation at 10:30 followed by a memorial service at 11 am will be held on Thursday, December 29th at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 4300 Walnut Lake Rd, West Bloomfield. In lieu of flowers, the family request that you share a smile in her memory.
