S. Windham – Elizabeth Valerie Phillips Allen was born in Malden, MA on July 9, 1925. She graduated from Melrose High School in Melrose, MA in 1943. She worked at the John Hancock Ins. Co. in Boston, MA and in several department stores. She was a volunteer at the U.S.O. in Boston during WWII.
On October 28, 1950 she married Jack B. Allen. Their son Mark Steven Allen was born on August 24, 1951 in Indianapolis, IN. while Jack was finishing studies for his B.A.E. degree.
Everyone knew her as "Betty" and she and Jack moved to Windham, CT where they built there house in S. Windham. Betty worked as a cook manager in Windham High School and taught in the adult evening night school as a ceramic teacher. She was a lecturer for the local Grange and a volunteer at McSweeney Adult Center in Willimantic. She taught Sunday School in her high school days and was secretary of the Sunday School in later life. She has also been a Cub and Girl Scout leader. She and Jack had camping for Sunday School children in the lower part of their property for a few weeks in the summer and Betty cooked all their meals.
Jack built a working miniature circus that Betty and he operated and it was shown to many audiences from 1971 to 1990.
Betty has 4 grandchildren, 2 boys and 2 girls. She had a wonderful smile and great sense of humor. Her final years were spent in Douglas Manor in Windham. We'll all miss her.
Visitation will be held on Friday from 10am till the time of the Funeral Home Service at 11am at Church & Allen Funeral Home, 136 Sachem St., Norwich, CT. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Central Baptist Church, 2 Union Sq., Norwich, CT 06360.

I had the pleasure of meeting you years ago at Backus and just recently had the pleasure of meeting Betty at Douglas, what a wonderful person and what a wonderful life she had. such a special person. what a smile she had. you are in our thoughts and prayers.
