Elizabeth Straughter Horne, age 75 of Seaside, CA passed away on March 8, 2010 in Sacramento, California after an extended illness. She was borne in Vicksburg, Mississippi to the parents Dave and Susie Miller Straughter. In 1953 she graduated from Bowman High, in Vicksburg Mississippi. Afterwards she attended Southern Business College. While in Business College she met the love of her life, Charles Leon Horne. They were married in 1957 in El Paso Texas. To this union 3 children were born, Michele Elizabeth, Michael Van, and Pamela Jeanne.

In 1958, they traveled by ship to the harbor of Bremerhaven, Germany where they later caught a train to take them to their new assignment in Verdun, France. While in France, they lived on the economy in the Terminus Hotel until they were able to purchase their first home, a trailer in Verdun at the American Homes Trailer Court. In 1960, they were later transferred to Nabollenbach, Germany. After their tour in Europe, they were stationed at Ft Ord, California where they retired from the military. They resided on the Monterey Peninsula from the end of 1961 until her untimely death.

Elizabeth worked for the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District for seven years. She was a Baker at the Noche Buena Child Care Center. We all loved her home made hot buttered rolls. Many life long friendships were developed while working there. Her greatest hobby was ensuring that everyone was well taken care of. Not only family, but friends, as well. She knew how to reach one's heart through their stomachs -- she was truly an awesome cook!!!!! A real Southern Belle who never missed an opportunity to lift someone's spirits or help someone in need. However, her most treasured position was that of Mother and Wife. She was the best mother any child could hope for.

She accepted Christ in her life at an early age in Vicksburg, Mississippi. When she first arrived on the Monterey Peninsula, she attended Friendship Baptist Church for several years before uniting with the Post Chapel on Sixth Street. When the chapel on sixth street was closed, she started attending the main chapel and has been a member there ever since.

Preceding her in death are her parents and 3 sisters, Rosie Lee Kemper, Natalie Kemper, and Hannah Mae Spencer. She leaves to cherish her memories, her husband, Charles Leon Horne of fifty two years, 2 daughters, Dr. Michele Elizabeth Horne of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Pamela Jeanne (Ernest) Cooper of Elk Grove, California; and one son, Michael Van Horne of Sacramento, California. She also has one step daughter, Carolyn Bradford and one step son, Carl Leon Horne, both of Vicksburg, Mississippi. She also leaves behind her heart, her 2 Grandchildren, Elizabeth and Anthony Cooper. Her only surviving beloved sister, Maggie S. Beacham lives in Las Vegas, Nevada. Also left behind are a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Elizabeth will be sorely missed. Our hearts ache with the pain of losing her. Her memory will be cherished forever as she was a living example of love and kindness for all of us to continue to follow. We wish that you didn't have to go, but we look forward to the time that we will see you again.
