Elkin Goddard Alston, Mrs. Philip Henry Alston, Jr., 94 of Sea Island,
Georgia passed away at her residence Thursday, July 14, 2011, being
cared for by her long time friend, Alice Flowers. There will be a
memorial service at 11:00 am, Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at H.M.
Patterson and Sons Spring Hill located at corner of Spring Street and
10th.
She was born June 26, 1917 in Atlanta, Georgia to the late John Newton
and Mary Nicolson Goddard. Mrs. Alston enjoyed spending time with her
children, grandchildren and great grand children and gardening. In
addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her
sister, Mary Goddard Pickens.
She was active in the Atlanta community, as a founding member of The
Forward Arts Foundation, one of the so called "Dirty Douzen". She was
active in the Junior League and a former Board Member of The Egleston
Children's Hospital. She also served her country along side of her
husband, Philip, US Ambassador to Australia. She was also a member of
Mimosa Garden Club, The Piedmont Driving Club, The Capitol City Club
and The Sea Island Club.
Survivors include daughter, Elkin Goddard Alston, son, John Goddard
(Jimmy) Alston and wife Gayle, five grandchildren, James Edward
(Jimmy) Cushman and wife Jackie, Elkin Cushman Taylor and husband,
Roger, John Goddard Alston, Jr. and wife Terri, Edith Alston McDonnell
and husband Sean, Jennifer Alston Euart and husband Pat; eight great
grandchildren, Margaret May "Maggie" Cushman, Robert G.Cushman,
Philip Henry Alston III, John "Jack" Goddard Alston III, May Alston
McDonnell, Julia Gray McDonnell, Alston Elizabeth Euart, and Lucile
"Lucy" Stokes Euart.
