Elsie Marie Norman was born May 23, 1924 to Aage and Marie Molby in Askov, Minnesota the oldest of five children. Askov was a Danish community and she could read and write Danish before she started school. She attended school at Sandstone, Minnesota and graduated in 1942. She then attended a trade school at Duluth, Minnesota and studied to be a machinist. She got a job at Boeing Airplane Company in Seattle as a machinist operating a milling machine. She was the only woman in that department at Boeings. She worked there for three years and at the end of World War II went to Des Moines, Iowa were she attended Grand View College. It was there she met her future husband, George Norman. After two years at Grand View College she transferred to the University of Minnesota into their school of nursing. George followed her to Minneapolis and attended Hamline University and he graduated from there and continued his graduate studies at the University of Minnesota. She and George were married in 1948.

They had a son, James and daughter, Janet. After moving to Seattle George worked in the industrial engineering department at The Boeing Airplane Company. For fifteen years Elsie worked at Providence Hospital and also for several doctors at a clinic in the Greenwood district. Elsie continued her education and returned to the Seattle Pacific University at age 39 and received a B.A. and M.A. in education and then transferred to the University of Washington specializing in remedial reading. She spent twenty-one years teaching remedial reading at White Center Heights Elementary in the Highline School District, retiring in 1987. Elsie spent a lifetime of teaching and serving her community and loved every minute of it.

Elsie was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and Luther Memorial Lutheran Church. In retirement she volunteered at the Nordic Heritage Museum working in their gift shop. She also volunteered at the Foss Nursing Home and she helped with the tutoring at Broadview-Thompson elementary school. She was also very active with the Northwest Danish Association. I met dear Elsie in 1971 when I began work at White
Center Heights. In a few years I was an aide for Elsie
when she taught in the Title I program. She was an excellent teacher and a pleasure to work with. We had our fun times on the side.

The WCH retirees meet for a monthly lunch and Elsie always kept things lively. We missed her last couple of years. Last year a few of us had lunch with her at the Norse Retirement Home. She still had her sense of humor.

I feel fortunate to be one of her many many
friends which were all very dear to her as was her Molby family. She had a special love for her children Jim, Janet, spouses and Granddaughter. Elsie will be missed by many!

Janet and Jim, I am so sorry to hear of your mom's death. I am sure you will miss her beautiful personality and love. She was the best. I will miss our hour long phone conversations and the many stories that we would recall. When I think of your mom I remember all the laughs we had and the stories of the classes we took together and the professors we put into total frustration as we got the whole class laughing. Then there was her spiritual side. She loved the Lord and I am sure that she is receiving love that is unbounding from Him.
I will miss her calling me and all the experiences that she was having in working with kids she tutored. She truly left a legacy that will live on in all of our memories.

I got to know Elsie and George through my very dear friend, their daughter Janet. They were always very kind to me.
Elsie was very close to Janet and Janet's wonderful husband Randy. She talked with Janet about everything, and the two of them would always be laughing together. Janet loved to be with her mother and was with her everyday until Elsie went to be with Her loving husband George, family and God.
She was a remarkable woman and was always very active in the community. Everyone who knew her....loved her, including me.
I am grateful I got to spend some time with her hours before she passed. I will miss her so very much, but I am glad she's in a better place. Love you always Elsie, Delores

What a beautiful testament to the special women that my Aunt Elsie was and always will be. She truly was a bright spot in everyone's life. She always made us laugh and giggle and she had the quirkiest sense of humor. I'm saddened that she has left this life, but thrilled she is with her husband, my Uncle George and my mom, her sister, and the rest of her family that has welcomed her home with open arms. Prayers go out to her family in hopes that they will find solace in the knowledge she is with her Heavenly Father and back home. Much love, Jeanie Molby-Studnek Owens

I have many memories as a child visiting my Aunt Elsie, and family, during one of my family's many travels. Even growing up in Alaska, my parents taught us the importance of knowing family and made a point of visiting distant relatives as often as possible; I am thankful for that opportunity. Aunt Elsie was a kind, loving, Christian women. I loved her enthusiasm for all things Scandinavian, it contributed greatly to my interest into genealogy. She was a remarkable women with a wide variety of talents and a real depth of knowledge. As a child, I was always impressed by her (or their) book collection. Having the baby of the five Molby children as a father, I was fascinated by the recollections of the eldest, Elsie; her remembrances of the earlier days on the Molby farm were far different than my Dad's. She will be deeply missed, but thankfully I know that I will see her smiling face again. I love you Aunt Elsie.
