Elva Lawrence Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 9, 2016.

Elva Louise Lawrence died on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at The Fountains at Cedar Park in Atco, NJ. She was 100 years of age. Born in Camden, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Lewis and Elizabeth Saal Renner.

Mrs. Lawrence was a retired secretary and was a longtime employee of Stokes Packing in Vincentown, NJ.

Elva and her husband, Alfred, were among the first residents to move into LeisureTown in Southampton, NJ in 1973. She had previously been a longtime resident of Medford Lakes, NJ.

She was a talented organist and piano player and also taught piano. In 1987 she was named Ms. Senior New Jersey.

Elva was the beloved wife of Alfred G. Lawrence for over 50 years before his death in 1991. She was the devoted mother of Judy Gillison (Jake) of Davenport, FL and H. David Lawrence (Karen) of Skillman, NJ. Elva was the longtime beloved companion of the late John L. Powers, III. She will be lovingly missed by her seven grandchildren, ten great- grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren.

Service and interment will be private.

I was glad to have known Elva. She was inspirational. She had a long life and learned her lessons the hard way like most of us. She worked and appreciated the jobs she had as a secretary back in the day in Camden, and her musician jobs, such as playing for the Developmental Center. She remeniced about her childhood visiting the German speaking grandparents in Staten Island and living in South Jersey. Elva was someone who strove to improve herself and get as much from life as possible. She explained that her Ms. Senior NJ title was such an accomplishment for her as she had thought of herself as somewhat shy, and certainly not a performer. But she said that when she competed and then won that title, she changed, blossoming into a performer. Elva loved her family, and was very proud of them all. She enjoyed her time with her kids, on the beaches of the lakes in Medford . She loved playing the piano and organ and accordian for the string band at the senior centers, and later at the Fountains, for the residents. I found her inspiring, she always challenged herself. She was a feminist, traveling with her girlfriends to Europe, an independent woman. Her husband was a lucky man, and I imagine he was a wonderful husband. She kept her spirits up when life got difficult for her. Elva saw a lot and adapted a lot in her one-hundred years. I will always be grateful that Elva was so loving toward my dad, John Powers, as she truly made a difference in his life after he became a widower. Elva got him involved in music and managed his social life. She was kind and loving to him. I will miss her.

Mrs. Lawrence was my first and only piano/organ teacher. I still remember her little note pad with my "homework" on it for next week. She was a patient teacher and a sweet woman. I thank her for helping me realize the talent that God gave me to share with my church family. Rest in Peace Mrs. Lawrence.
Sincerely, Kathy Chappine Rosmando, Vincentown, NJ
