Elwaine was also very active in his community. He was a charter member of the Heights Chamber of Commerce, and as an active member of the Optimist Club he helped start two clubs in Houston.

Mr. Elwaine, I miss you. I was ill with a brain tumor so I was not driving. Found your business card and both numbers were not working. I know you are in heaven, you was one of the best person I have ever met of any race or creed. I enjoyed every visit with you, they were precious time spent. Bless your family and may God and you watch over from them for heaven.

Elwaine Barrett, I am not happy with your sudden exit. Just so you know, leaving me on the same day I got out of the hospital was crummy. Yet, I understand you didn't want to leave us at all and were not ready to go. Apparently, God had other plans for you that day. He must have decided that you had fought the fight long enough and wanted you to stop hurting, physically. I have to agree with him, there.
Oh, how I loved you! You will forever be in my heart and not far away from my thoughts. I told Nathaniel Barrett Correll to always remember you will be as close to him as his own heart. Anytime he needs you to just picture you and that you will be there to listen and give that same wonderful advice given to the rest of us. "I understand your feelings, do what you must do to care for yourself and your family."
I will miss your laughter, stories and wonderful smile, your close, long never-ending hugs that only ended when I pulled away. That amazing sense of wonder at the miracle of living and joy that we get to experience it together. No one can take away all the memories, the joy, the laughter, the sadness, the sorrow we shared as family. I was a very lucky neice to have you for an uncle.
Just wanted to add a special note for Shirley and her extended family... Thank you for accepting Elwaine into your family and for loving him so, dearly.
Shirley, I want to thank you especially for loving him back to God. I know he never faltered in his trust and love for God, but until you reached out to him he had not had a church home in a very long time. Thank you for giving him that experience we all long for, that sense of belonging to a fellowship of christian believers. What a special gift to share with a husband!
You were his gift and he treasured you so much! We will always love you and our joined families are lucky to have each other.
May God give us all the comfort and peace we need at this time of sorrow, so that we may move on with the remainder of our lives. Give us strength to carry on and continue our paths toward wholeness and perfection in Christ's name. Amen.

Dear Shirley,
Judy and I extend our condolences on your loss. You know how much Elwaine meant to me when I was in Houston. I looked to him for guidance and advice on so many occasions. He was always there for me. Always caring and always willing to offer guidance. It was never condescending or bossy. He was a very special guy. We are thinking of him, you and your family and have you in our prayers.

We will miss Elwaine as he was the great mentor to Lee in many ways. He was a fine man of integrity with lots of compassion and love to give. He was truly a friend.

I love you Uncle Elwaine and I cherish the many talks we had at the car lot on Shepherd. Whether you know it or not, the lessons that you taught me in those conversations have shaped who I am and the way I deal with life. Thank you for your love and for the time that you gave to each of us. We will miss you.
