Biography

Emily Joan Alward was born July 4, 1935 in West Lafayette, Indiana to parents Basil Elwood and Esther (Barrett) Montgomery. She was a beautiful baby. She was even featured as a Gerber Baby. She was an only child. As a young girl, she thought EVERYBODY was celebrating HER birthday! She was very creative and imaginative as a child. She loved pretending to be a gypsie. From time to time, a teacher would try to squash her enthusiasm, but rarely succeeded. She was a big fan of science fiction, fantasy and Star Trek. When she was 14, she spent a year in New Zealand. Throughout her life she has traveled extensively in Europe. England was one of her favorite places. Just last year she went to Mexico with Paula and her family. In December 2010, Melissa, Cinnamon and Summer were marching in the Disney Holiday Parade. Emily, Linda and Paula all went to cheer them on. She was very bright. She earned her undergraduate degree at age 19 from Purdue, and then went on to get her Masters at Indiana University. She's done book reviews on-line and has had short stories published as well. She worked as a Librarian and thoroughly enjoyed it. Most of her career was at the University Librarian level. She worked at Purdue, Frostburg State University and DePauw in Indiana. At age 21, she married Paul Alward, whom she thought looked quite a bit like Paul Newman. They met in college and he swept her off her feet. They were married for thirteen years.

When she wasn't working she enjoyed reading, traveling, writing, she wrote five short stories that were published by major publishers (yes, she's even written a novel....the girls just need to figure out how to get it printed now), Church and her very special friend, Binky, the yorkie/poodle mix. She also enjoyed sewing little stuffed animals.

She has two beautiful daughters, Linda and Paula. She was a single mom....and made it look easy. She was the fun mom. All the neighborhood kids wanted to play at her house! She was very involved with her girls. She encouraged them to follow their dreams, to grow and explore life....to be the best they can be.

This profound interest carried on into her relationship with her grandchildren. She enjoyed taking them to dance lessons and cheering them on.

Paula moved to Las Vegas first. Then Emily followed 12 years ago and Linda came two years later.

Family was also very important to Emily. She enjoyed spending time with Paula and Anthony, and their children Cinnamon, Summer and Scarlett, and Linda and John, and their children Christopher, Matthew, Angela and Melissa.

Emily Joan Alward was a vibrant, beautiful woman. All who knew her will remember her fondly.

"I had the pleasure of helping Ms. Alward for several years in my pharmacy. She was always so patient, so kind, and so sweet. My heart goes out to her many..." Shawna Guedry (Las Vegas, NV)
