Emma Lee Daugherty, age 95, left this world December 2, 2012, in her home with family by her side. She was born in Weathers, OK, March 3, 1917, to Charley Clifford Smith and Bessie Lee Smith (Jennings). She married Mallie Lee "Son" Daugherty in Talihina, OK, October 25, 1933 and shared 28 years with him until his death in 1961.
At age 48, she went to work at Tinker AFB, where she was nicknamed "Big Emma" (due to her small stature), and retired in 1982 after 20 years of service.
Emma was preceded in death by her beloved parents, husband, one sister, two brothers, one daughter-in-law, and one grandchild.
She was the mother of 2 daughters, Betty Henry (Louis)/Owasso, Virginia Lou Babcock/OKC; 2 sons, Richard Daugherty/Enid, and Kenneth Daugherty (Holly)/OKC. She had 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.
A woman who trusted God, she was an avid reader of books and newspapers. She loved cooking, gardening, fishing, camping, music, traveling, dancing, movies and playing "slots". She survived the Great Depression, Oklahoma Dust Bowl, WWI & II, and the loss of so many beloved family members.
Emma was best known to family and friends as "Grandma", a name which symbolized the truest part of her identity.
Grandma, you were our "Rock" – life will never be the same, we will miss you forever. Oh, what a grand part you played in all our lives. We always knew you would be there for us. Your fun- loving spirit, keen wit, kindness and devotion was immeasurable. You will never be forgotten. May you rest peacefully with those who have been waiting for you. Walk slowly – and wait for us.
The family would like to thank Dr. John Seguin and Nurse Terri Fitzgerald, Mercy Health Edmond, and all the wonderful employees at Harbor Light Hospice for taking such tender care of Grandma – especially her loving caregiver, Nurse Lois Harris, who took "Miss Pumpkin's" hand and walked her through to her journey's end, where she was quietly and peacefully released into the awaiting arms of God.
