Ernest F. Ashby, 88, of Davenport passed away Thursday, August 7, 2014 at Genesis East Medical Center. Per his request, cremation will be done with a memorial service to be held 2:00PM Thursday August 14, 2014 at the Davenport Memorial Park All Veterans Memorial. Memorials may be made to the Genesis Visiting Nurses Association. On line condolences can be shared at www.rungemortuary.com. Ernest was born October 9, 1925 in Centerville, IA to Raymond & Rosa (Sales) Ashby. He served in the US Navy from 1943-46 as a Coxswain, having served in the Philippines and during the occupation of China. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Wilson on July 5, 1946 in Davenport.

Ernest had been employed with IA IL Gas & Electric for 42 years retiring in 1987 as a crew leader. He was a member of the Blue Grass American Legion Post #711, enjoyed stock car racing, wood working, bowling, & boating. Being around his grandchildren & great grandchildren were his favorite times.

Survivors include; his wife Dorothy, Davenport; 3 sons Greg (Linda) Ashby, Bettendorf, Larry Ashby, Portland, OR, & David (Marsha) Ashby, Davenport; 9 grandchildren Deanna, Shawn, Julie, Rachel, Heather, Vickie, Steven, Jamie, & Michelle; 23 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; sister Rosamary (Roger) Schwerdtfeger, Bettendorf; & a step brother Johnny (Mae) Wright, Davenport.


Ernest was preceded in death by a daughter Patricia Webster, son Kevin Ashby, & 2 brothers William & Russell Ashby.
