Estelle Katz passed away at her home in Brookline, surrounded by her family on Thursday, February 7, 2013. Estelle was the daughter of the late Samuel Katz and Rose(Goldkrand)Katz. She was the sister of the late Paul Katz of Brookline. She leaves her sister Janet Hoffman and her husband, William of Quincy, her nephew Donald Hoffman, her nieces Fredda Cole and Marjorie Serrano, her grand-nephews Miguel and Daniel Serrano, Tony and Joey Hoffman, her grand-niece Maria Arrington, great-grand nephews and great grand nieces Maleek and Emma, Dylan and Paige, Alivia, Alana and Annalise, and Javier.

Estelle had a long career with the Boston Public Schools as an elementary teacher, and then as an adjustment counselor. She was a licensed psychologist and social worker. She had degrees from both the Massachusetts State Teachers College and Boston University. Ms. Katz was an active figure in Brookline government, having been a Selectwoman in the 1980's, and serving as a Town Meeting Member for 42 years. She is a member of the Brookline Advisory Committee, having served for more than 20 years. She also served on the Brookline Rent Control Board. As a very active member of the Democratic Party, Estelle participated in many national, state and local political campaigns, and was a regular state convention delegate. She is a board member of Brookline PAX.

In December 2012, she was presented with the Ethel Halperin Lifetime Achievement Award from Brookline PAX. In 2013, she received the 2013 Distinguished Service Award from the Brookline Rotary Club, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Brookline Commission for Women, which she founded and chaired. Estelle was a long-time member of Temple Ohabei Shalom, in Brookline. She taught Sunday school and was active in the Sisterhood as well as singing in the choir and doing solos for services and occasions.

All her life, Estelle was a jazz song stylist, singing first with her mother, Rose, accompanying her on the piano. She performed at local clubs with the late Tony Parker (Anthony Procopio). One could hear her at First Light in Brookline. Most recently, she was a regular with the Winiker Brothers, entertaining at all types of events, and on many a Sunday morning at Skipjack's in Boston. In 2005, she released a CD with the Winikers, "Estelle Sings." Estelle still found time to support Brandeis and to enjoy her friends as a Red Hat Lady.

Services will be held at Temple Ohabei Shalom, 1187 Beacon Street, Brookline, on Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at 11:00AM, with burial to follow at Lindwood Cemetery, Randolph.
