Esther Stevens Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 14, 2014.

Greensboro-Mrs. Esther Wooten Stevens, 82, died on Monday, April 14, 2014 at High Point Regional Hospital. Graveside services, officiated by Reverend Nila Souther, will be at 1 PM, Thursday, April 17 at Lakeview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 PM on Wednesday, April 16 at Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm chapel and at other times at the residence of Chris and Donna Stevens, 4608 Saddlewood Club Drive, High Point, NC 27265.

Esther was born in Vass, NC and was educated at Greensboro High School and Nyack Missionary College where she earned a degree in teaching. In 1955 she married James Herman Stevens and spent fifty two wonderful years together until his death in 2007. Together they raised their son, Chris and spent time together traveling extensively as a family. She was employed for more than forty years with Southern Life Insurance from which she retired. Esther was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, enjoyed listening to classical music, doing crosswords and watching TV. She was a member of St. Paul Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School. She will be remembered as a generous, sweet lady who could strike up a great conversation with anyone.

She is survived by her son Chris and his wife Donna of High Point; grandson, Jordan Stevens; brothers, Elvin Wooten of Union Town, PA and Robert Wooten of Greensboro; sister, Bonnie Adams of Charlotte; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105. On line condolences may be made to www.haneslineberryfuneralhomes.com.

Chris,

Suzanne and I are sorry for your loss. Your mother had a long and full life but I know you will still miss her. I haven't seen her in a number of years, but looking at the pictures brought back many fond memories. Our prayers are with you.

I worked with Esther at Southern Life for four years. She was a wonderful mentor with a wicked sense of humor. I always enjoyed picking on her but I had to be ready to receive as well as give!

I hope you find comfort in knowing that she was loved and will be missed by a lot of people.
