Ethel Adell Harrand Brayton, age 86, of Traverse City passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at the Grand Traverse Pavilions with her family at her side. She was born December 22, 1925 in Kingsley on the Wheat Centennial Farm to Calvin O. and Louise A. (Wheat) Houghton.

On May 19, 1945 Ethel married the late Alfred J. Harrand at St. Mary Hannah Catholic Church. Together they raised 3 daughters. In August 1978 Ethel married the late John Bratyon Sr. in Kingsley.

Ethel worked as a seamstress for many years at Meach Cleaners and Wilhelm's department Store. She was a foster care parent to many children, a long time member of St. Mary Hannah Catholic Church, and one of the original Altar Society members. Every year until this last one, Ethel worked at the annual Apple Pie Day held at the church. She was also very active in the yearly Father's Day Chicken Dinner held at the church.

Ethel enjoyed Bunco, Bingo, and the casino. She was often found talking with or playing Euchre with her many friends at the Village at Bay Ridge, where she resided for over 10 years.

Ethel was known as a kind and caring person, she always had time to sit and talk. She will be greatly missed by her three daughters: Lorraine Miner of Traverse City, Barb (Rodney) Bogart and Rita (Dan) Schneider both of Kingsley; 6 Grandchildren and 6 great grand children; 3 step children: Kay, John (Rose) Jr., and Dave (Karen) Brayton; 8 step grandchildren, and 25 step great grandchildren; a brother Raymond Houghton of Kaleva, many nieces nephews and cousins.

Besides her parents, Ethel was preceded in death by her first husband Alfred in 1971 and her second husband John Sr. in 2001; an infant grandson, son-in-law Rick Miner Sr., sister and best friend Marian Hogarth, and brothers: Chester and Calvin Houghton.

A visitation will be held Friday, January 27, 2012 from 5-8 p.m. at the Covell Funeral Home in Kingsley with a scripture service at 7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Hannah Catholic Church with visitation 1 hour prior. Burial will be at St. Mary Hannah Catholic Cemetery. We would like to thank the staff and volunteers of the Birch unit at the Pavilions. Also thanks Michigan Hospice.

Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Mary Hannah Catholic School.
