Eugene A. Miller of Williamsville, a retired bank executive and Navy veteran, died Sunday in Erie County Medical Center. He was 92.

Born in Buffalo, he was a 1939 graduate of the Nichols School. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1943.

He also studied at Dartmouth College and Princeton University, where he took courses related to his sonar and minesweeping duties as a commanding officer in the Navy during World War II.

In a typhoon in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, Mr. Miller successfully captained his ship among a fleet of 12, two of which sank.

He returned to active duty during the Korean War and completed a 30-year career in the Naval Reserve, where he taught strategy and tactics.

Mr. Miller worked for a time as an insurance representative and sales agent for International Life Co. and R.F. Pleu Agency. He was a certified life underwriter.

However, the major part of his working career was in banking. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, he was trust executive for Liberty Bank.

In 1977, Mr. Miller began serving as vice president and manager of the Trust Department at M&T Bank, from which he retired in 1989.

He also was a sought-after estate planner who served many of Buffalo's top attorneys by teaching professional seminars and courses.

Mr. Miller was a member of the Children's Guild board of directors' finance team and was honored with the title director emeritus for his two decades of service.

He was a director of the Buffalo Advertising Club, the Navy League, the Buffalo Launch Club, Saturn Club and the Buffalo Curling Club.

He also served on the board of the Hidden Ridge Homeowners Association in Williamsville.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, the former Florence M. "Babe" Gretch; two daughters, Dr. M. Gretchen Grant and Nancy M. Clifford; and three sons, Dr. John A., Eugene A. Jr. and Christopher A.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. April 27 in St. Michael Catholic Church, 671 Washington St.

"Geno and family, My condolences on your loss. Your father appeared to have a full life with a wonderful family. While I don't believe I ever met your dad,..." Billy Mountford (South Bend, IN)
