Fickenscher, Eugenia Lucia Garces Osorio, known as Lucia by her friends, 80, of Williamsburg, VA passed away peacefully on October 13, 2013 surrounded by her family after a long illness.
Lucia is survived by her loving husband, David B. Fickenscher of Williamsburg and her three children David M. Fickenscher 55 of Berkeley, CA, Kathryn M. Miller 52, of Manassas, VA and Anita L. Degen, 50 of Seattle, WA and grandchildren, Kaitlyn Redelman 25 of Washington, DC and Reno Degen 14 of Seattle, WA. and her sons and daughters in law, Jennifer Fickenscher, Kurt Miller and Jeffrey Degen.
She is also survived by her sister Nila Garces Osorio of Alexandria, VA and her brothers Mario Garces of Miami FL and Hernan Garces of Lynchburg, VA as well as so many other loving family members.
Lucia was a compassionate woman who touched everyone she met with her grace and intellect. She had a deep curiosity for all things cultural and loved literature, particularly Yeats, Joyce, Borges and Naruda. She loved art, music, and history. She had an eye for beauty whether it hung in a museum or a simple still life on her kitchen table.
Lucia was born in Cartago, Colombia, S.A. and schooled at the Sacred Heart Convent in Medellin, Colombia, S.A. She immigrated to Miami, Florida with her family in 1952. She attended the University of Miami until meeting her future husband and lifelong love, David Fickenscher.
They married in 1955, and with her naval officer husband, traveled the world. Lucia never stopped studying and attended Universities wherever they were stationed. She earned her bachelors degree in 1981 and her masters degree in Spanish Literature from George Mason University in 1985. She taught Spanish language and Conversation at George Mason until retiring in the late 1990's.
In 1992 she was a founding board member of Foro Cultural Colombiano, a cultural forum that supports Latin American artists. Through this organization she was able to foster opportunity for poets, writers and artists from a part of the world that she loved so much.
She never hesitated to reach out to those in need and even in her last days was thinking of others. Lucia's strength, courage, fortitude, and grace have been an inspiration to her whole family and so many others.

"So sad to hear of Ms. Lucia's passing. She was such a sweet angel, when we moved to the area she was the first person I met and I could always look out my..." Dia Caffey (Williamsburg, VA)
