Evelyn "Evie" D. (Gregory) Ashby, 93, of Evansville, passed away Monday, May 27, 2013, at St. Mary's Medical Center. She was born May 1, 1920, in Evansville, to the late Chester and Edna (Pohl) Gregory.
Evelyn graduated from Central High School in 1937 and worked for Dun and Bradstreet. She married her late husband, Vernon C. Ashby, on January 9, 1944. She was a lifelong member of St. John's United Church of Christ, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. Evelyn always looked forward to her monthly get-togethers with her Clabber, Tripoley and Couples Clubs. Evie loved reading and annual family vacations in Florida, and she was a fan of the University of Evansville Basketball, New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon, in 2011; parents, Edna (Pohl) and Chester Gregory; and son-in-law, Thomas Listenfelt.
She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Listenfelt of Evansville; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Clifton "Corky" and Anne Ashby of Terre Haute, IN; and cousins, nieces and nephews.
Services will be 11:00 AM Friday, May 31, 2013, at Alexander East Chapel, officiated by Rev. John Branam, with burial in Park Lawn Cemetery. Friends may visit Thursday from 3:00 to 7:00 PM and Friday from 10:00 AM until service time at the funeral home.
The family would like to thank Dr. Richard Murray and staff, Dr. Dion Dulay and staff, and everyone at St. Mary's Medical Center, especially the ER, ICU, Five Central, and Six South for all the care and compassion shown to Evelyn.
