The Honorable Evelyn Werth Hill, a retired NC Superior Court Judge, was born November 9, 1948 in Brunswick, Georgia, and passed away unexpectedly at the age of 62 at her home in Raleigh on May 5, 2011. She graduated from Randolph-Macon Women's College magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in German, and graduated with honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law. The Honorable Evelyn Werth Hill, a retired NC Superior Court Judge, was born November 9, 1948 in Brunswick, Georgia, and passed away unexpectedly at the age of 62 at her home in Raleigh on May 5, 2011.

She graduated from Randolph-Macon Women's College magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in German, and graduated with honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law.

She had a long and successful career as an Assistant District Attorney in Wake County, and was known as an intelligent, caring, skillful and diligent prosecutor. During this period, she also was an Adjunct Professor in criminal law at North Carolina State University. In November, 2000 she was the first woman elected as a Wake County Superior Court Judge, and served in this role from January 2001 to January 2006.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Raleigh, and a former member of The North Carolina State Bar and the North Carolina and Wake County Bar Associations. She was an avid dog lover and kept several dogs at her home.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Elizabeth Werth Hill and David William Hill.

She is survived by her daughter and best friend, Leewyn Elisabeth Kellam, and her husband Brian Hatch; her two sisters, Cyn St. Clair of Bellingham, WA, and Mary Shinn of El Paso, TX; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 14, at 3:00 pm in the Memorial Hall of the First Presbyterian Church, 120 W. Hargett Street Raleigh. The family will receive friends immediately following the service

The family would like to thank Evelyn's many friends, co-workers, and especially the neighbors who provided so much support to Leewyn following Evelyn's death (including care of Evelyn's beloved dogs).

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to WUNC-FM radio, 120 Friday Center Drive, Chapel Hill, NC 27517.
