Evelyn Honig, 89 of Boca Raton, FL; formerly of Worcester, MA; died May 1, 2014 at Homewood Residence in Boca Raton, FL.
She was the wife of 60 years to John Honig, deceased in 2006. John Honig was the President of Anglo Fabrics Company in Webster, MA. Evelyn Honig is survived by a son, Richard Honig of Santa Fe, NM; a daughter, Wendy Honig of Boca Raton, FL; and a grandson, Jeffrey Honig of West Hollywood, CA. Evelyn is also survived by her sister-in-law Helena Cohn of New York City, and her sister-in-law Marilyn Honig of New York City, NY.
Evelyn was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1924. She graduated from Erasmus Hall High School and received a BA from Brooklyn College in Brooklyn, NY and was voted "Prettiest Girl Award" by the student body of Brooklyn College. Evelyn was enrolled in a Masters program in Art at Assumption College in Worcester, MA. She was a docent in the Worcester Art Museum and a member of numerous organizations including: Beth Israel Sisterhood, National Council of Jewish Women, Hadassah, ORT, and Brandeis.
As a hobby, Evelyn and John were deeply involved with the breeding and exhibiting of purebred collies and cairn terriers for nearly 50 years. They owned and campaigned some of the most outstanding champion show collies of their time under the kennel prefix name of Accalia Collies.
Evelyn was a 50 year member of the Collie Club of America. She was the American Kennel Club Delegate for the California Collie Club. For many years Evelyn held the position as the Massachusetts District Director for the Collie Club of America. She was a member and Vice President of Worcester County Kennel Club and a member of the prestigious Ladies Dog Club of Wellesley, MA. Evelyn was also a lifetime member of the Collie Club of New England, the Collie Club of Long Island and the Quarter Century Collie Group.
Evelyn's love for the sport of dogs took her further. She was one of the most notable and most popular judges for the American Kennel Club. She judged all of the herding breeds, including the Herding Group and Best In Show. Evelyn was a favorite judge for Junior Showmanship. Well respected and always in demand for her judging ability and expertise, she judged AKC purebred dogs, not only nationally, but internationally. She was especially known for judging collies and shelties. It was the highest honor that she was selected to judge the Collie Club of America National Specialty in 1995 in Oklahoma City, OK. One of her most memorable judging assignments was in Japan. She retired from judging five years ago.
A private memorial service will be held graveside by the family at 11:15 am on Sunday, May 4, 2014 at Mount Lebanon Cemetery, 7800 Myrtle Avenue, Glendale, Queens, NY 11385. Memorial observance will be held on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 from 2 to 4 pm, and 6 to 8 pm at the Social Room, residence of Wendy Honig, 20320 Fairway Oaks Drive, Boca Raton, FL. At the request of Evelyn's family, donations may be made to Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney Street Boston, MA 02115; Alzheimer's Association, P.O.
