Evelyne L. Karson (Moore), 91, of Overland Park, passed away on Feb. 12, 2014 at her home. Visitation is at McGilley & Hoge Chapel, 8024 Sante Fe Dr., O.P., Ks., on Sat. Feb. 22, 10:00 to noon. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in her name to the at www.cancer.org. Evelyne was born Nov. 4, 1922 in Kansas City, Ks., the only child of Hylda and Horace Moore. Her parents divorced when she was 5 and she moved with her mother to K.C., Mo. where she later graduated from Manual High School. As a teen, Evelyne became a Catholic and was a member of Holy Cross Church in O.P. when she passed. After high school, Evelyne attended the K.C. Art Institute and worked at the Plaza Bowl where she met her husband, James Calvert Karson. They wed Mar. 14, 1942 and affectionately called each other "Karson" for the rest of their lives. They were married for 49 yrs.until James passed in 1991. Shortly after they were wed, they were separated for 2 yrs. while James served abroad in WWII. During the War, Evelyne worked at Wilson Packing Co. and then at Belger Cartage Co., met her best friend of over 70 yrs., Robbie Cox, and waited and prayed for her soldier to return home safely. After the War, Evelyne and James started a family, and between Oct. 1945 and Jan. 1961 they had 8 children (and lost two to miscarriages). They also started a business, Calvert's Village Salon, one of the original shops in Prairie Village. They loved bowling, playing cards, entertaining friends and traveling with their kids, especially to Chicago to visit her mom, Hylda, and step-dad, Ted Linn. While raising 8 kids, Evelyne also did all the accounting, billing, payroll and advertising for the Salon. When her youngest started school, she went to work for K.U. Medical Center, where she became executive admin. asst. to the director of the psychiatry dept. for most of her 26 years there. After retiring from K.U., Evelyne was a frequent volunteer at her church and became president of the senior parishoners' Sunshine Club for 4 yrs. To keep active, she took a holiday job at Jones Co. that turned into an 18 yr. career. She retired for good at 89. Evelyne was predeceased by husband James, daughter Penny (Riederer) and sons Nick and Dave. She is survived by sons Jamie (Janice), Terry and Chris (Jodi), daughters Kathy Lewis (Brad) and Jody Thurman (Marty), son-in-law Steve Riederer, daughters-in-law Kathy and Brenda Karson, cousin Marc Thoren (Barbra), 19 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. The family thanks the staffs of O.P. Regional Hospital and K.C. Hospice for their care. Evelyne was a beautiful and strong woman who loved, and was loved by, her family. She and James raised their children to have respect, consideration and compassion for others-and for that, their children thank them with all their hearts. Although deeply saddened by the loss of Evelyne, the family is happy that she may now rest beside her beloved "Karson."
