Everett P. Alther, Sr., 98, formerly of Swanzey, NH died at Langdon Place, Keene, NH on August 7, 2012, following a period of failing health. He was born in Glen Rock, NJ on May 1, 1914, son of Charles and Louise Alther. Mr. Alther moved to Keene, NH from New Jersey in 1952. He bought a business and began a life long career as a salesman and owner of Twin States Industrial Distributors. After selling his business in the mid 80's, he developed a new business, Twin States Abrasives, which he eventually sold to a larger company. He continued to work out of his home for this company until he retired at the age of 96. He loved to travel...
Everett P. Alther, Sr., 98, formerly of Swanzey, NH died at Langdon Place, Keene, NH on August 7, 2012, following a period of failing health.
He was born in Glen Rock, NJ on May 1, 1914, son of Charles and Louise Alther.
Mr. Alther moved to Keene, NH from New Jersey in 1952. He bought a business and began a life long career as a salesman and owner of Twin States Industrial Distributors. After selling his business in the mid 80's, he developed a new business, Twin States Abrasives, which he eventually sold to a larger company. He continued to work out of his home for this company until he retired at the age of 96. He loved to travel around New England and NY talking to his customers, selling his products and making friends.
Mr. Alther was a member of the National Industrial Distributors Association and the New England Industrial Distributors Association, for which he served on the board. He was a member of the Rotary Club, the Keene Chamber of Commerce and SCORE.
He played basketball and football in high school; he loved golf and was a member of the Keene Country Club for many years. He was an avid tennis player into his 80's.
Mr. Alther had a passion for music. He was an accomplished trumpet player. He was a member of a band which played the nightclubs of NY and NJ during the big band era. They played opening sets for big bands, including Glenn Miller and Jimmy Dorsey. In his 80's he continued his love of music by learning to play the saxophone.
Survivors include six children: Suzanne and her husband, Roland Nadeau of Keene; E. Philip and his wife Marylou of Richmond; Marylouise Alther and her husband, Glenn Davis of Keene; Judith Duhaime of Centerport, NY; Christine and her husband, Scott Clarke of Swanzey; and Daniel and his wife, Mary of Richmond.
Mr. Alther is also survived by 12 grandchildren: Dr. Joseph Nadeau and his wife, Stacy of Durham, NC; Tim Nadeau of Swanzey; Brian Nadeau and his wife, Gretchen, of Westmoreland; Joshua Nadeau of Keene; Shannon Alther and his wife, Susan of Stratham, NH; Gretchen Alther of Cambridge, MA; Michael Alther of Richmond; Alexander Davis of Keene; Amy Hill and her husband Coleman of Weathersfield, VT; Emily Duhaime and her partner, Dr. Britt Olson of Denver, CO; Hannah Blood and her husband, Justin of Vernon, CT; and Alishia Alther of Richmond.
Mr. Alther has 13 great grandchildren.
His wife, Mary, a brother, Robert and a grandson, Jeremy, died previously.

There are no calling hours. Friends and family are invited to a celebration of his life which will be held on Sunday, August 12, from 5-7PM at the Pub Restaurant, Ralston St., Keene, NH. Mr. Alther spent many Friday afternoons with friends at the Pub – it was his "home away from home".

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made in Mr. Alther's memory to: Home Health Care and Hospice, PO Box 564, Keene, NH 03431.
