Dr. Everett J. Carmody, MD passed away March 9, 2014. He was born March 29, 1923 in Providence, RI to John Patrick and Mary Carmody, the youngest of six children. At the age of eight he was hit by a car and seriously injured, losing the sight in one eye and hearing in one ear.

Despite this early setback he never let his disabilities limit what he could accomplish. He attended Providence College in RI while working five jobs to pay his tuition, and also saving money to cover the cost of his graduate education. Due to financial constraints, he applied only to the one local medical school, Tufts Medical School in Boston, was accepted and graduated with his MD specializing in Internal Medicine. He was the first of his large family to graduate from college and to earn a graduate degree. His strong belief in higher education was passed on to his children, who were told at a very young age that they were expected to go to college and graduate school. They all subsequently followed his example.

While working as an Internist at Charles V. Chapin Hospital in Providence he met a young head pediatric nurse who became the love of his life, Dorothy Carmody. They were married on November 27, 1954 and were inseparable for over 53 years. She passed away in 2008.

In 1955 he enlisted in the US Army. He and his family were stationed in Germany with the Medical Company of the 86th Infantry Regiment. Captain Carmody, his wife and young son John returned to States in 1957, and he moved his family from the cold of New England to the sunshine of California in 1958. This was a move that he never regretted because he saw California as a place with great weather and unlimited potential.

After spending the first few years in San Diego, where Dr. Carmody served as chief of geriatrics and rehabilitation at Edgemont Hospital, he became the medical director of Long Beach General Hospital in 1964, and served in that position until the closing of the facility in 1983. He continued to serve with the Los Angeles County Health Services Department until his retirement in 1990.

He is survived by his children, Dr. John P. Carmody, MD (Lynne), Thomas J. Carmody, Ph.D. (Kristin), Everett J. Carmody, Jr. CPA, MBA, (Juli) and Mary A. Carmody Kelley, JD, and his grandchildren: Sean, Bryan, Christopher, Richard, Jason, Joseph, and Caitlin.

He will be forever greatly loved and deeply missed by his family and friends. Viewing will be held on March 13 from 4pm-7pm at the Luyben Family Mortuary, 5161 Arbor Rd. in Long Beach. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 14 at 10 am at St. Cornelius Catholic Church, 5500 E. Wardlow Road, Long Beach, burial immediately following at All Souls Cemetery, Long Beach.
