Everette Grayson Harris of 3923 Robinhood Road, Winston-Salem peacefully departed this life April 17, 2014. He was 89 years old. Everette was born September 3, 1924 to Grover and Janie Hollingsworth Harris. After his mother's death Everette grew up at the Methodist Children's Home in Winston-Salem. He enlisted in the U. S. Army after high school and served as a B-17 waist gunner during WWII until being shot down and captured by the Germans in 1944. For his service Everette was awarded the Purple Heart, Air Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and POW medal in addition to the various campaign and victory medals awarded for serving in the European...
Everette Grayson Harris of 3923 Robinhood Road, Winston-Salem peacefully departed this life April 17, 2014. He was 89 years old. Everette was born September 3, 1924 to Grover and Janie Hollingsworth Harris. After his mother's death Everette grew up at the Methodist Children's Home in Winston-Salem. He enlisted in the U. S. Army after high school and served as a B-17 waist gunner during WWII until being shot down and captured by the Germans in 1944. For his service Everette was awarded the Purple Heart, Air Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and POW medal in addition to the various campaign and victory medals awarded for serving in the European Theater. Following his discharge from the Army Everette attended NC State University where he studied mechanical engineering. Dec. 27, 1947 Everette wed Virginia Holcomb. They were married 64 years at the time of Virginia's death in 2012. Everette and Virginia were faithful members of the College Park Baptist Church in Winston-Salem where he served as a deacon and in other leadership roles. Prior to his retirement in 1986 Everette was a supervisor of production planning at Container Corporation. He is survived by five children: Sheila Vogler (John), Grayson Harris, Steve Harris (Bettye), Susan Pugh (Bobby), and Mark Harris (Beth), twelve grand-children, and eleven great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held at Vogler's Funeral Home, 2951Reynolda Road from 6-8 pm Sunday April 20. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Monday April 21 at College Park Baptist Church, 1701 W. Polo Road, Winston-Salem with Dr. Mark Harris and Rev. Ramon Smith officiating. Mr. Harris will be buried with military honors in Forsyth Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to College Park Baptist Church, Hospice & Palliative Care Center 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
