Born in 1920 on a homestead in Hecla, South Dakota, Fern was raised on the family farm until moving to Joy, Illinois, in 1938. She married James Stevenson Hughes shortly before the start of WWII. They resided in Milan, Illinois, where they were prominent members of the community, and raised three children.

When her son James B. became paralyzed in an accident as a young man, Fern devoted her life to being his caregiver, and was a loving, constant, and reliable presence for her entire family.

In 1974, she, her husband, and their son James B., once again homesteaded as they were among the first to settle in Spring Hill, before it became the well-established community it is today.

Fern was a gourmet cook (no one baked pies like she could), accomplished seamstress, and china painter. She enjoyed bowling, was a connoisseur of fine wine, and traveled with her family throughout Europe well into her seventies. She was the strong, resilient, and supportive center of her large, extended family.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, James S.; her brothers Robert, Daniel, Edward, and George Tschappat; her daughter, Judy Doran; and son James B. She is survived and will be fondly remembered by her son Gary (Wendy) of Rock Island, IL; beloved grandchildren Julia (Todd) Bauer, Edwin E. Doran III, Jennifer Morgan, and Shelley Hughes; and great-grandchildren Caitlyn, Eddie, Thomas, and Makenna.
