Florence Edith (Diana) Herbert of Evansville, Indiana died peacefully at 11:45 pm, October 4, 2016. She was 96 years old. Diana had lived at River Pointe Health Campus for the past seven years, surrounded by family and friends. Her husband Fred Herbert had passed away in August 1988.
Diana was born January 26, 1920, in Bethnal Green, London, England, one of five children- three sisters and one brother. She met Fred when she was nine years old, and they became teenage sweethearts. Diana left school at fourteen years old and became a skilled paper folder at Waterlows, the printer, and during World War Il worked in a London munitions factory. Fred became a mechanic in the British Royal Air Force serving in Africa and Europe, and after the War, in 1945 they married. Their son, Alan, was born in 1947, and there being a lack of good housing and jobs in England, they moved to the United States in 1950, initially settling in Daylight, Indiana and later the North Park area of Evansville.
Diana became a full time homemaker, and Fred began a thirty five year career as an electronics technician with Sears, Risley Electronics and later Niemeier TV Sales. They were married for forty four years, with a dedication to parenting and family. They loved participating in their son's activities, ballroom dancing and travelling throughout the United States and Europe. When Fred passed away in 1988, Diana continued a career in food service, while enjoying time for gardening, singing in the Evansville Chorale Club and spending time with her British friends in the "Cheerio Club." She was passionate about her British heritage, and delighted in spending time with her growing family in England and the United States. Diana lived independently until 2009, when she entered River Pointe assisted living health campus.
Diana was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Ellen Watson; sisters, Bessie Harmsworth, Lillian Smith, Daisy Rolfe and brother, Thomas Watson. She is survived by her son, Alan Herbert and daughter-in-law Connie (Gaiser) Herbert of Longboat Key, Florida and Barrington, Illinois; four grandchildren, Shannon (Herbert) Saul of Fishers, Indiana, Courtney (Herbert) Hesch of Elmhurst, Illinois, Ryan Herbert of Scottsdale, Arizona and Andrew Herbert of Vernon Hills, Illinois; and nine Great Grandchildren. She is deeply loved, greatly missed by all and will be remembered forever.
