O'Neal Shumpert Starnes, 90, of Charlotte passed away June 10, 2017. Born in Pineville, NC, to Perry and Myrtle Shumpert on May 9, 1927, O'Neal was the oldest of four children. After graduating from high school, she attended the University of South Carolina and graduated Phi Beta Kappa after only three years. She married Charlie Orr Starnes and was a wonderful wife, mother to their son Charlie (Chuck), and homemaker. O'Neal worked at Presbyterian Hospital in the business office for many years and later as business manager of a carpet business that she and her husband owned.
O'Neal was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Charlie, her sisters Elaine Tilley and Mildred (Mick) Ferguson, and her brother, John Shumpert. She is survived by her son Charlie Starnes, his wife Grace, and her grandson Charlie of Los Angeles, CA. She is also survived by her nephew, Woodie Vick of Fayetteville, NC, and Nancy Lindsay, her close friend and caregiver.
O'Neal was a very warm, caring woman who loved to help others. Her smile was contagious, and she loved giving and receiving hugs. Among her many talents, she was gifted as a great whistler. She whistled hymns and favorite old tunes for most of her life bringing joy to everyone around her. O'Neal was a member of Park Road Baptist Church over a period of 30 years where she taught Sunday School to children and later to adults.
