Florence Novinger "Flo" Davis, philanthropist and civic leader passed away on September 21, 2011 at her home in Jacksonville, Florida, at the age of 101. Mrs. Davis was born on November 13, 1909, in Millersburg, PA, the only child of Oliver S. and Loyetta Weist Novinger. The family moved to northeast Miami in 1920. Flo graduated from Miami High School in 1926 and went to Brenau College in Gainesville, GA. After attending Brenau College, she returned to Miami where she was employed by Western Union and became the manager of the Hialeah Western Union office. This is where she met her future husband J.E., one of the founders of Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. Flo and J.E. were married on January 27, 1932, in West Palm Beach and resided in Miami. Their first child, Dorothy Jean Davis, was born in Miami on June 6, 1933. A second child, James E. Davis, Jr., was born in Miami and passed away at age 5. In 1944, the family moved to New York where Mr. Davis served in the U.S. Army as Officer in Charge of the New York Quarter Master Market Center. Their second son, Andrew Dano Davis, was born on June 2, 1945, in New Rochelle, New York. Following Mr. Davis's discharge from the Army in late 1946, the family moved to Jacksonville, where the company's headquarters had been relocated from Miami. In Jacksonville, Flo was a supporter of many organizations, including Community Connections (formerly the YWCA), Jacksonville University, The Mayo Clinic, and The Bolles School. She served on the YWCA Board beginning in 1950 and was President in 1953 and 1954. In 1961, she founded the Bolles Parents' Association. She was a Trustee of Jacksonville University from 1963 to 1993, and served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees in 1979 and 1980. She was a recipient of the Eve Award for Volunteer Service in 1979. She was a member of Riverside Avenue Christian Church, and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution since 1940. Flo was a wonderful wife, and loving mother and grandmother. She was predeceased by her son, James Elsworth Davis, Jr., on May 9, 1944, and her husband, James Elsworth Davis on March 19, 1993. She is survived by a daughter, Dorothy Davis Smith of Eustis, Florida, a son, Andrew Dano Davis of Jacksonville, Florida, 7 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. The family extends its grateful appreciation to all of the dedicated caregivers at their mother's home, especially Carol Powers, and to the physicians and staff at The Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, for their devotion, skill and attentiveness. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at Riverside Avenue Christian Church, 2841 Riverside Avenue, Jacksonville, Florida 32205. The family will have a private burial following the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to Community Connections, Mayo Clinic of Florida, Jacksonville University or Seamark Ranch.
