Florian Schweer Novak, a pioneer in advancing the causes of the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center, passed away at the age of 86 on February 19, 2014. He was affectionately known as the Mayor of the Village of Ed Gould Plaza and was a visionary leader for the Southern California Special Olympics, in support of his younger brother, Edwin.

In 2006, Mr. Novak was named Outstanding Volunteer of the Year for the Center's Family Services Program, where he spearheaded monthly Family Day in the Park events and other family-focused gatherings. He was a tireless organizer of games and craft projects, and served as an intergenerational ambassador to parents and children alike. His favorite activity was serving as a surrogate "grandpa" to the children of LGBT parents.

Family Services Manager Arielle Rosen says Florian's participation made a wonderful difference. "So many of the children have grandparents who live far away or are out of contact with their kids, so it's fantastic to have surrogate grandparents to play a regular role in their lives. Florian was such a terrific role model. The kids loved him, and I think he got almost as much enjoyment as he gave."

In 2008, a city-wide poster campaign announcing "Gay Heroes" included the picture of UGLA member and octogenarian Florian Novak.

He was a native of West Los Angeles and at the early age of six was involved in working with his father in gardening and landscaping which eventually led to his own successful gardening business.

Mr. Novak will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

A viewing and family reception will be held Tuesday, February 25th, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Pierce Brothers Valhalla, 10621 Victory Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 91606. The memorial service and burial will be Wednesday, February 26th, at 1 p.m.

"I only met Mr. Novak recently. I had the pleasure of being his nurse for just one night. He made me remember why I became a nurse. When it was time for me..." C. (Los Angeles, CA)
