Floyd Jackson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 24, 2015.

After a very long 65 years, Sergeant Floyd JR Jackson is coming home from the Korean War.

Sergeant Jackson served his country with honor in Korea as an Infantryman in the 3rd Infantry Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. He was captured on December 12, 1950 and died at Camp One on the Yalu River on February 3, 1951.

His remains were not identified until December 2013. Upon positive confirmation of the identity of his remains, his niece, Joanna Mueller of Bailey, asked that he be brought home to be buried next to his family at Olinger Chapel Hill Cemetery in Centennial.

Sergeant Jackson was posthumously awarded the Prisoner of War Medal, his Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Purple Heart.

The public is invited to participate in his graveside funeral with Full US Army Honors on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at 10:00AM at Olinger Chapel Hill Cemetery, 6601 South Colorado Blvd. in Centennial.

Thank you, Sgt. Jackson, for your sacrifice. Although time has assigned the memory of your service to the ages, your selflessness has again been exposed by your family's love and admiration. Your name, along with countless others' names are forever recorded on the tablets of Duty, Honor, and Country; and I will be forever grateful for your sacrifice.

My father, Gerard A. Francois served with Sgt. Jackson in Hq 3/31/7 (31st Regimental Combat Team) at the Chosin Reservoir. He was also taken POW and they would have been in Death Valley together. Sgt. Jackson would have died before my father was moved to Camp 1.

The 31st RCT managed to fight for 5 days, overwhelmed by Chinese forces and temperatures dipping to 50 below zero. They had no supplies and were in summer gear. The guards in the prison camp said "they fought like tigers". The 31st RCT later became know as Task Force Faith and the survivors formed the Army Chapter of the Chosin Few. Every year at their reunion these men honor their fallen, they have never been forgotten.

To the family of Sgt. Jackson, please know that his life was not given in vain. South Korea is a beautiful and viable nation today because of the sacrifice made by men like him.

On behalf of the family of Gerard A. Francois, the team of "Task Force Faith: The Story of the 31st Regimental Combat Team" and the Army Chapter of the Chosin Few we honor Sgt. Floyd Jackson and welcome him home.
Pro Patria.

Hello. My name is Gloria Shonrock and I just wanted to tell you that I was in your shoes last year. My father William F. Day was id'd last January and I was notified in February. We had him taken to Kentucky to be buried next to his mother also. I tried to get the local news to run his story for the news factor of the DNA but apparently they didn't think it was relevant at the time. The longmont times call ace the Boulder daily camera did run very nice stories. I was very happy to see that the news finally took an interest in the DNA story. We need to get this out more so that more of our soldiers can come home. Thank you for listening. Please feel free to call me at 303-641-4961. If you would like to talk. Glo

To the family of Sgt. Floyd Jackson Jr: Welcome home to the country you defended so well. I thank you for your loyal service, and I grieve that you spent time as a POW. While I cannot know anything about your time as a prisoner, I can only believe that you dealt with it with great dignity. As you now rest with your family in Centennial, may all be comforted and blessed. I would love to honor you with attendance at your final resting services, but I am committed to an American Legion Auxiliary function in Wisconsin. Thank you, Sgt. Jackson, for serving America in Korea.
Respectfully submitted,
