MAJ (Ret) Forest R. Smith February 25, 1919-October 12, 2013 Columbus, Georgia- MAJ (Ret) Forest R. Smith was born Feb. 25, 1919 in Lenox, Iowa and graduated from high school in 1936. He entered the Army on February 3,1941. He was a resident of Columbus since 1958, and was a member of Edgewood Baptist Church. Forest served in both World War II and the Korean War. MAJ (Ret) Forest R. Smith

February 25, 1919-October 12, 2013

Columbus, Georgia- MAJ (Ret) Forest R. Smith was born Feb. 25, 1919 in Lenox, Iowa and graduated from high school in 1936. He entered the Army on February 3,1941. He was a resident of Columbus since 1958, and was a member of Edgewood Baptist Church.
Forest served in both World War II and the Korean War. In World War II, he received the Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Combat Infantryman Badge. In the Korean Conflict, he served as a captain and received The Bronze Star Medal (First Oak Leaf Cluster) for meritorious achievement in ground operations against the enemy in Korea, March 17 to June 30, 1952. He was part of the All Army Pistol Team for 13 years and won the 1954 National Championship with the .45 cal. pistol. Forest served in the U.S. Army for 22 years.

He was then employed by Hartford Insurance Company, Hamilton Management Company, where he was the local manager and consultant for 20 years.

Forest was predeceased by his wife Goldia Smith, his parents, William and Lou Smith, brothers Jim (Dottie) Smith, sisters Lucille (Truman) Addison, Wilma (Walt) Bowman, Nellie (Warren) Bowman, Louetta (Bill) Combs, Dorothy (Zeb) Houk and one grandchild Brian S. Wynn.

He is survived by his daughters Judy Wynn of Columbus, Pam (Ray) Booms of Milford, MI., sons Bill (Bobbi) Smith, Forest R. (Linda) Smith, Jr. of Box Springs, Ga. and Richard (Theresa) Smith of Asheville, N.C., six grandchildren, Shelley (Todd), Landen, Andrea (Andrew) Barnes, Kippi (Joe) Schneller, Andrew (Shannan) Smith, Somer (Matt) Mason, Eric Smith and 16 great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made in his name to Columbus Hospice at www.columbushospice.com.
