Frances Colvin Welden, 96, died in New Orleans on Friday, Sept. 8 after a brief illness. She was known and loved for many years as the “Butterfly Lady” of uptown New Orleans, bringing her love of butterflies and caterpillars to children in the area’s elementary schools as well as to adult friends and neighbors. She was instrumental in the creation of the Butterfly Walk at City Park. She was the daughter of Fred Colvin and Ellen Frances Merkl Colvin, both deceased. She was the widow of Arthur L. Welden, Jr., Professor of Botany Emeritus at Tulane University. She is survived by her loving sons Charles Woodson (Amy) Welden and Arthur Frederick (Karen Mann) Welden, and grandchildren Linnea, Corwin, and Alexander. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Southern Lepidopterists’ Society, southernlepsoc.org; or to Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana, no-hunger.org, 700 Edwards Ave, New Orleans, LA 70123.

Condolences to Fred and Karen and C.W. and Amy, and Linnea and Corwin and Alexander.
Frances and Arthur Welden were good friends to my parents; they are sorely missed.
I'll always have my childhood memories of wonder at the "Magickal Screened Porch of Monarch Chrysalises" on Willow Street that Frances tended.
She was very kind and I'll never forget her.

I am so sorry to hear of your mom's passing. Arthur and Frances were dear to me during my years at Tulane and since I returned to New Orleans in retirement. I have many fond memories of dinner at Anne and Don's, good stories of tropical trips and butterfly adventures. Frances also roped me in to do butterfly surveys in the Lower Garden District neighborhoods and is the reason I now grow plants mostly to feed the butterflies. She gave me a tulip poplar as a house warming present for my new house in 1988, with visions I'm sure of the numbers of tiger swallowtails it might support. She was a kind, sweet lady and I am proud and grateful that she was part of my life.
Warmly, Julie Denslow
