Frances, born November 20, 1934, in Hutchinson, Ks. was the daughter of Chipman and Tennie Butler Essley. Before settling in Fresno in 1947, the family lived in Burrton, Ks., Salinas, Ca., and Tulsa and Pryor, Ok.
In 1948, Frances won the Fresno County and California Spelling Bees. In 1952, she was the valedictorian of her Fresno High School class. She was first chair of the Fresno High School orchestra and the Fresno-Madera Counties Honor Orchestra and was selected for the California-Western Music Educators All-Conference Orchestra in San Diego.
After two years at Fresno State College, she transferred to the University of Washington where she majored in Latin. Frances was honored by election to membership in Phi Beta Kappa and was also selected outstanding senior in the Classics Department and named as one of University of Washington's Women of Achievement for the Theta Sigma Phi Matrix Table honoring Seattle's Women of Achievement. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree magna cum laude in 1956.
She began her career in January 1957, at Fresno High School, where she taught Latin and French. She was one of the original faculty members at McLane High School when it opened in 1959. Although Latin was her first love, she also taught French, English and German. She served several terms as foreign language department chairman and in later years coordinated the school's GATE and AP programs. She often said that she was fortunate to have taught at a time when students wanted to succeed, and she could name many of them and recall what they did.
Frances treasured her membership in Phi Mu and served in several collegiate and alumnae offices, including the presidency of the Fresno Alumnae Chapter. Her professional affiliations included Delta Kappa Gamma, American Classical League, California Classical Association-North, Foreign Language Association of Northern California, and Fresno County Division of California Retired Teachers Association. She was president of Gamma Delta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, CCA-N, Fresno CRTA, and a member of the board of FLANC. She was also an active member of Fresno Republican Women Federated.
She enjoyed travel, books, stitchery, gardening, and bridge. For ten years she went twice a year to Edmonton, Alberta, to attend Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club games. Tours included Europe and New Zealand, but she was delighted in planning her own trips and driving herself. She crossed both the United States and Canada and drove several times in Scotland (her favorite) and England, twice in New Zealand and once each in Sweden and Italy.
Among Frances' surviving cousins are, Charlene Hogan of Sachse, Tx., Daniel and Marsha Dodd of Midland, Tx., Jay and Catherine Essley and Phil and Jean Essley of Tulsa, Ok.
Visitation will be held at Whitehurst, Sullivan, Burns & Blair Funeral Home on Friday, July 5, 2013 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.
A Funeral Service will be held at Whitehurst, Sulllivan, Burns & Blair Funeral Home on Friday, July 5, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Belmont Memorial Park.
Remembrances may be sent to the Central Valley SPCA, 103 South Hughes, Fresno, Ca. 93706.
