Frank McAdams Albrecht, Jr., 78, of Staunton, passed away on Saturday April 27, 2013 at Envoy of Staunton.
Dr. Albrecht was born on June 18, 1934 in State College, PA and was the son of the late Major General Frank McAdams and Page (Williams) Albrecht, Sr. After high school Frank followed in his father's footsteps and briefly served in the United States Army. After his military service, Frank furthered his education, ultimately receiving doctorate degrees in both history and psychology from Johns Hopkins University. Frank taught history at Hollins College in Roanoke in the 1960's during which time he was introduced to and became actively involved in the theater scene in Staunton. Dr. Albrecht eventually moved to Maryland where he had a long career as a clinical psychologist. During that time he was an occasional stage manager and served on the Board of Ballet Theatre of Annapolis (now Ballet Theater of Maryland) and also worked as a columnist for the Star Democrat in Easton, MD, writing about mental health and social trends. Dr. Albrecht retired to Staunton in 2002, and at the age of 68 began writing poetry. In 2005 he self-published a book of his own poems called Sing and Louder Sing, which he later adapted into a one man show, "Becoming Myself And That Wasn't Easy." He performed in a number of plays at the Oak Grove Theater in Verona and also served on the board of directors of Theater Wagon. Before his death Frank was working on a book about Fletcher and Margaret Collins and their influence on the history of theater in the upper Shenandoah Valley. Dr. Albrecht was a unique personality, and in recent years he could often be seen riding his tricycle around downtown Staunton, often with his much-beloved dog, Buddy, trotting alongside. In addition to his love of the arts, he was an avid sailor in his younger years and also took great interest in American Indian worship and cultural practices.
Dr. Albrecht is survived by a son, Donald Albrecht and wife Melanie of London, England; three daughters, Page Albrecht and husband Bojan Valovic of Washington, D.C., Ann Albrecht of Orlando, FL, Frances Albrecht of Wakefield, England; step daughter, Sarah Miller of Havelock, N.C.; six grandchildren, and numerous close friends who will greatly miss him. In addition to his parents, Dr. Albrecht was preceded in death by his sister, Jane Albrecht.
A celebration of Frank's Life will be held at a later date in Staunton.
