Frank Slaninger Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 3, 2016.

Frank Slaninger, 72, brother, friend, lawyer, sportsman, passed away quietly at home on Wednesday, November 30, and is now at peace.

Frank was born September 19,1944, in Lake City, Iowa, to Paul and Loveda (nee Peterson) Slaninger. He spent his early years in Iowa and New York, returning with his family to Des Moines, Iowa, in 1951. Frank graduated from Dowling High School in 1962 and attended Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, receiving his bachelor's degree in 1966. He finished his formal education with a law degree from Harvard University in 1969.

After graduation from law school, Frank spent a short time on the staff of a law firm in Cleveland, OH, and also at the SEC. He was admitted to the Colorado bar in 1970 and was in private practice in Denver from 1977 until his retirement in 2009.

Frank was an active member of the Elder Law Section of the Colorado Bar and participated in the Solo Law Firm group. He was a member of the American Bar Association, the Denver Bar Association, and was admitted to practice before the US District Court, the US Court of Appeals, and the US Supreme Court.

Frank had a lifetime passion for hunting and fishing. He loved sharing this passion with numerous friends old and new, as well as trying out the latest gear and techniques. From his many adventures as a sportsman he had an unlimited repertoire of stories which made every conversation with him an interesting one.

Above everything else, Frank had an insatiable curiosity about the world and an interest in other people. He made friends easily and had a generous nature. Among his many kindnesses, he donated many hours over the years to the Denver chapter of the Volunteers of America.

Frank is survived by his sisters, Jeanne Hutchison of Birmingham, Alabama, and Mary Boyd of Salem, Oregon. He is also survived by his special companion of 19 years, Hannelore Cortes of Aurora. He was predeceased by his parents.

There will be a memorial service for Frank's friends and family to share their memories and honor his life on Sunday, December 11, at 1:00pm at Olinger Hampden Mortuary, 8600 E. Hampden Ave., Denver, CO 80231.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Frank's memory to a charity of your choice.

Frank was the brightest light -- so funny and just a great guy. Frank and my husband, Jack Hauser, have hunted and fished together for many years. Several months after Frank passed, Jack, too was taken at the same age. Hope they're having fun now, fishing and enjoying the great outdoors.

Frank always lit up the room with a joke and a story that elicited a nugget of wisdom or at least a chuckle. Although we did not see each other often, we always enjoyed each others company over the past 20 years. A lovely flame has gone out and made the world a little darker.

I knew Frank as an avid skier through our association with the Schussbaumer Ski Club back in the `70's & `80's - one fine gentleman.

Frank was a loyal and valuable member of the Colorado Bar Association. As the executive diector of the CBA I had frequent interactions with Frank. He was un failingly positive, always wanting to improve the practice of law and the profession. I will miss his thoughtful counsel. Charles C. Turner

I ran into Frank the day I left a job that was not a very good job but happened to be in his building. He helped me carry my things out the door, gave me advice, met me to go over work options and even helped me get my career going forward, looking for another job. I was a stranger to him and he did this out of the kindness of his heart. I have never met another attorney like this and will never forget what he did for me.

Frank's passing is truly a huge loss to the elder law practice in Colorado. He was a very sincere and caring attorney who was a fierce advocate for his clients and for all of the elderly and disabled. He will be sorely missed at the bar association meetings.

Our family would see Frank in Des Moines when we visited our grandparents, Joseph and Albina (cousin of Loveda) Gillmeier in the late 1950s-1960s. I remember the wonderful meals we had at the house of Paul and Loveda with Jeanne, Frank and Mary Lou. Frank seemed to have his future all planned out and it seems that he had a great life.

When we first met Frank when we were camped and fishing on the Gunnison River over 20 years ago, we never knew that a friendship would develop and that memories of time spent with Frank and Hannelore will last forever.

Frank was a dear soul. I am very sad to see him go so suddenly. However, I also know he would not have wanted to linger with a sickness or be a burden. We had many interesting conversations over the years and I always learned something new. I have the deepest admiration for his dedication to his health. Erin

My how we, Tony and Lynne Lane, enjoyed knowing Frank and his wry humor.
Frank, you will be missed. You and Tony can now commiserate about all your hunting and fishing stories.
