Fred Winford McCray, 76, passed away Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
He was born July 3, 1936, in Greenville, son of the late George H. and Julia Almarode McCray.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth L. McCray and Chester R. McCray; loving parents-in-law, Ward L. and Hilda Cohron.
Mr. McCray was a life long member of Fishersville United Methodist Church where he held many offices and sang in the choir for over 50 years. He was a member of the Stuarts Draft Fire Department for over 50 years. Fred was an active member of the Telecom Pioneer retirees. He volunteered with meals on wheels, Augusta County Free Clinic and was an Army veteran.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Shirley H. McCray; one daughter, Karla McCray Hallock and husband, Brad, of Frederick, Md.; two grandchildren, Katelyn and Jenna Hallock; one brother, Robert L. McCray and wife, Billie, of Richmond; one sister, Phyllis McCray Robertson of Fishersville; sister-in-law, Myriam G. McCray of Richmond and a number of nieces and nephews.
A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 19, 2012, in the Fishersville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Larry Jent officiating.
Burial will follow at Augusta Memorial Park.
Active pallbearers will be Vaughn Ashby, Randal Almarode, Gene Kane, Bill Humphries, John Baker and Hugh Baldwin.
Honorary pallbearers will be the CBF Sunday School Class, members of the Stuarts Draft Fire Department and FUMC Chancel Choir.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012, in the Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Fishersville United Methodist Church General Fund, 1600 Jefferson Hwy, Fishersville, VA 22939 or the Stuarts Draft Fire Department, P. O. Box 548, Stuarts Draft, VA 24477.
