Fred William Pander, a retired Master Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps, a punter with an educated toe, and a trumpet player worthy of the Julliard School, was a man devoted to his loving wife Pat (Cole) Pander, his family, community and his country. He possessed a devotion that inspired awe in all who knew him. Fred passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at the age of 83. Fred William Pander, a retired Master Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps, a punter with an educated toe, and a trumpet player worthy of the Julliard School, was a man devoted to his loving wife Pat (Cole) Pander, his family, community and his country. He possessed a devotion that inspired awe in all who knew him. Fred passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at the age of 83.
Fred was born June 24, 1930 in Rochester, son of the late James and Sarah (Johnston) Pander. He was a graduate of Rochester High School, Class of 1949. Fred was an outstanding punter on the football team and an accomplished trumpet player.
He proudly served his country with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War, retiring with 21 years of service. Fred also retired from the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare, Rochester Office, with 20 years of employment.
In his leisure, Fred enjoyed golfing and woodworking. He was a self-taught craftsman and carpenter. Family and friends have many of his creations, from rocking horses to rocking chairs, each becoming a cherished keepsake made from his hands.
In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by a grandson: Michael Pander; his brother: James Pander; four sisters: Helen (Coffman) Ray; Gertrude (Miller) Seitz; Margaret Draganza; and Sally Dishler.
Fred is survived by his loving wife of 62 years: Patricia "Pat" (Cole) Pander; one son: John R. Pander, League City, TX; four grandchildren: Shawn Pander, Austin, TX; Patrick Pander and his wife Sarah, League City, TX; Jonna Pander, Austin, TX; Colton Pander, League City, TX; two great grandchildren: Austin and Braylee Pander.
Friends will be received Friday, May 9, 2014 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the SAUL-GABAUER FUNERAL HOME, INC., 273 Route 68, Rochester (GPS 848 Sunflower Road, adjacent to Sylvania Hills Memorial Park Mausoleum). His funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, May 10, 2014, in the funeral home. Private interment will follow in Sylvania Hills Memorial Park.
