Freda (Starnes) Burckhard passed away peacefully on February 21, 2014 with her children at her side. She was born June 12, 1925 to Lansford and Bessie (Adams) Starnes in Orla, MO.

As a young girl she attended a one room school. She had wonderful memories of that time, especially at her grandparents' home. Her grandmother taught her to make 9 patch quilt blocks and that was the start of her life-long love of quilting.

In 1937, her family moved to Yakima, where she graduated from Union Gap School.
Freda married the love of her life. Joseph Burckhard in 1943 on the Army Base in Sioux City, Iowa. After his deployment, she returned to await his return almost 4 years later. Once back, they made their home and raised a family in Yakima. They were married over 65 years.

Freda was so proud to be a homemaker, wife and mother. She loved baking, embroidering, gardening and canning.

She was past president of the Plumbers & Pipe Fitters Union Auxiliary and a member of VFW Auxiliary #379.

Always a mother, she was a Den Mother for her son's Cub Scout pack and helped with programs at Holy Family Parish.

Freda is survived by 4 of her 7 children, Marilyn Verge of Edmonds, WA, Linda Burckhard of Yakima, Mary (Bob) Metcalf of Yakima and Paul (Joanne) Burckhard of Yakima. She had 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by brother Don Starnes of Sea Tac, WA and sister, Doris VanAlstine of Selah, WA.

Freda was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Joseph; daughter, Darlene; sons, Joseph and Steven; grandson, Jon Joseph; sister, Phyllis McCartney and brother, Lowell Starnes.

Freda's family always felt her love and support. She was a great role model and we will miss her very much.

We would like to express how grateful we are to the staff and facility of Cottage in the Meadow Hospice Center. They allowed us to keep our promise to fulfill her wishes.

In lieu of flowers we request making a donation to your favorite charity.
