Dear Alworth Family:

There were two athletes in my opinion that put Glen Ridge on the map and Fred was one of those two. The classes that followed treasured the legacy that Fred left at GRHS. I know I echo the sentiments of my former teammates when I offer our condolences to the entire Alworth Family at this time.

Sincerely,

Bob Courter
Class of 1965.

Alworth Family,

Having been a Montclair High baseball player Class of 1958, I knew a lot about Fred Alworth, Glen Ridge's outstanding pitcher. Then as young men we played basketball at the Montclair YMCA and became friends.

I am a member of the GRHS Hall of Fame Selection Committee. So, I asked Fred if he had a scrapbook, because I was sure he belonged in our Hall of Fame. We met and I copied key articles, which I presented to the committee. Once they read and saw how great Fred was, he was a unanimous selection.

I am sad that Fred is gone. We talked about playing golf together and never scheduled it. We talked about going to some baseball games and never scheduled it. Part of that is because I have been living in Maine since 2008.

Maine or New Jersey -- my heart is very heavy right now. Condolences to the Alworth Family.
