Frederick J. Athing of New Bern, formerly of Bay Shore, New York passed away suddenly on Thursday, June 30, 2011 at CarolinaEast Medical Center surrounded by his loving wife and children. He was born July 1, 1928 in Brooklyn, New York and was a graduate of Erasmus Hall High School. After graduation he played for a minor league baseball team. He lived in Bay Shore for 33 years before retiring to New Bern, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents Lillian and Fred Athing and infant grandson Andrew Athing. Frederick J. Athing of New Bern, formerly of Bay Shore, New York passed away suddenly on Thursday, June 30, 2011 at CarolinaEast Medical Center surrounded by his loving wife and children. He was born July 1, 1928 in Brooklyn, New York and was a graduate of Erasmus Hall High School. After graduation he played for a minor league baseball team. He lived in Bay Shore for 33 years before retiring to New Bern, North Carolina.
He was preceded in death by his parents Lillian and Fred Athing and infant grandson Andrew Athing. He is survived by his loving wife Carol of 56 years and children Ellen (Jan) Christensen, Kenneth Athing (Beth Irland), Robert (Teresa) Athing, Andrew (Susan) Athing, Christine Briscoe, Carol Hastings, 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He retired from the New York Telephone Company as a Manager after 35 years of service. After his retirement he had the pleasure of serving as an Aide to State Senator Ceasar Trunzo. His involvement in organizations include Past President of Bright Bay Civic Association, Bay Shore Tuna Club Board of Directors, Bay Shore/Brightwaters Public Library Restoration Committee, Little League baseball coach, member of Bay Shore Yacht club Board of Governors, President of the Mr. and Mrs. Club of Bay Shore, Zone Leader for the Town of Islip Republican Party, member of the Telephone Pioneers, 55 year member of Kings County Masonic Lodge #511 in Brooklyn, New York, member of Columbian Commandery #1 Knights Templar, New York, Bay-View-Flatbush Chapter #298 Royal Arch Mason, New York, Kismet Shriners, New York and Sudan Shriners, New Bern.
The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 pm and 6:00-8:00 pm Monday, July 4, 2011 at Cotten Funeral Home. There will be a Masonic service at 8:00 pm after the visitation at the funeral home. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at Christ Church in New Bern.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ Church Capital Fund in New Bern or to American Stroke Association P. O. Box 5216 Glen Allen, VA 23058
