Michele Saunders

To Pam, Kay, Victoria, Mike, Michele and Robbie,
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this difficult time. There are so many wonderful and comical memories Freddie has given you as well as many of us that have known him throughout his life. Just thinking and talking to my family about those memories put a smile and made us laugh as if it was just happening right then and there. That was the best thing about Freddie, he made the best of every moment and there was always laughter. God definitely broke the mold when Freddie was put on this earth. There was no one in this world that measures up to the kind of man that Freddie was. He was a best friend, comedian, kind (he would give the shirt off his back for anyone in need), courageous (except when it came to the ocean and "shahks", and trying a taste of "lobstah") He was honest, trustworthy and honorable. You could see how much Freddie loved life. He will be missed by many, but the memories he has made in everyone's life will live on forever.
Freddie,Thanks for being such a great friend to my Dad. Thanks for just being you. I will miss you!

To Fred's family,

You may not know me but as easy as Fred made friends, I'm sure there are many like me out there. I used to bowl on the same team with him many years ago at Holiday Bowl. I remember Fred to be a great bowler and friendly with everyone in the house, even with his opponents. He used to plow my street after many a snow storm and we used to exchange friendly waves as he artfully swung out into the road to prevent filling my driveway again. Hopefully the many wonderful memories that you have of Fred will help you through this time of grief.

Fred has been an important part of our family forever. He was like a brother to Michele, Denise, Ann-Marie and Val, he is Uncle Fred to Liz and he is the best friend we ever had. We enjoyed fishing, hunting, burning stumps and laughing for hours. No one could spin a yarn or tell a story quite like Fred. He lived life, enjoyed a good time and we were all the better for it. Oh how we prayed that you guys would beat this thing and enjoy the simple new york retirement of your dreams. Great memories of good times. Miss you.

To the Avery family,

I was very sorry to read about Fred's passing this morning as I read The Day online. I knew Fred for many years, from when we were kids when both our fathers were on the State Police until I moved away from the area several years ago. I also had the pleasure to work with Fred when I was the Resident Trooper in Montville for a couple of short years in the early 90's.

I will always remember his smile, engaging personality and his infectious laugh. He was always fun to be around and would do anything for another person in need. There are few words that can bring comfort to his loved ones but I hope that the bright memories of his life can soften his tragic loss and bring you all some comfort. He will be missed by many I'm sure, God Bless you Fred, you were a decent, honorable man.

To all the Avery's ....losing Freddie is such a loss to his family, his many friends and his extended family and he will always live in our hearts. I feel like I have lost a member of my own family.
I do remember him driving the snow plow and stopping on Dydo Drive for a cup of coffee and of course he had to get that plow off the road so he would park it at the far end of my driveway. And of course my driveway would be plowed. And he would get his cup of coffee.
Sleep soundly Freddie and know you will always live in our hearts.

Pam and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Fred and my father shared a special bond throughout the years and he and Pam were thought of as an extended part of our family. He had a special gift of making people laugh. I'm not sure if it was his contagious laugh, his corny sayings or the ability to chuckle at himself but when you seen him coming, you knew you were going to laugh. We were very blessed to have known him. I know he is in heaven and ask me how I'm so sure. To quote one of Fred's older sayings "Does a chicken have lips"? Rest in peace my friend.

I was six when our parents, Kay & Fred Avery, adopted Fred. He arrived at our house on Old Colchester Road on New Year's Eve and he died on New Year's Day. I'm happy he was my brother and that our paths crossed.
My brother, Fred loved the outdoors. He loved his guns & hunting with our Dad, cousin Dave Branche & Bob Saunders.
Fred loved camping, fishing, walking in the woods, working around the yard, chopping and stacking wood, riding his ATV, and plowing snow (just kidding).
I always called Fred the Mayor of Montville because everyone in town knew him. And he had so many lifelong friends: his first and closest friend, Ed Andrews, Jimmy Kernozek, his work buddy & sidekick Melvin, Eddie& Keith Bragdon, Pete Andrews, Jimmy Scovish, John Scovish, and his newer friends, Lincoln “Linc” and Chet, I met for the first time right before he died.
Fred loved working for the Montville Public Works Department. He loved all the guys in the shop. The guys were really great to visit and call him on the phone to check on him while he was sick.
You might not know that Fred loved Jackie Gleason aka Ralph Cramden (from The Honeymooners), The Three Stooges, and Ray Romano's show, “Everyone loves Raymond”. He had a good sense of humor and he always made me laugh.
He had a very generous nature and a heart of gold. He'd give you the shirt off his back.
He met Pam Bonnano, the love of his life, at the Montville Town Hall, and they were together for over 14 years. They had plans to build on their property located in upstate New York and to enjoy their retirement years together.
I admired his courage as he fought lung cancer. He endured terrible pain and radiation & chemo treatments without complaining.
Fred – I'm sure going to miss you. Love you, your sister Victoria
