Frederick Benson Leathers, Jr., 80, of Athens passed away on October 28, 2012. Born in Athens, Georgia, he was the son of Pearl Wells Leathers and Frederick Benson Leathers, Sr. He participated in the Athens YMCA programs and was a leader at the Athens Y Camp. He was a graduate of Athens High School and played on the undefeated basketball team of 1950. Fred graduated from the University of Georgia and was a member of the freshman basketball team, as well as a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Frederick Benson Leathers, Jr., 80, of Athens passed away on October 28, 2012. Born in Athens, Georgia, he was the son of Pearl Wells Leathers and Frederick Benson Leathers, Sr. He participated in the Athens YMCA programs and was a leader at the Athens Y Camp. He was a graduate of Athens High School and played on the undefeated basketball team of 1950. Fred graduated from the University of Georgia and was a member of the freshman basketball team, as well as a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
After serving in the United States Navy he returned to Athens to make his home. He was a member of the Athens Touchdown Club, serving as president, a member of Gridiron, Georgia Student Educational Fund, the Athens Country Club and The First United Methodist Church. He served on the Athens City Council and the Personnel Board for the City.
Fred was known for his compassion for family and his devotion to friends. He was a warm, caring, and kind person and enjoyed sending beautifully expressed notes to those he loved.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nan Richardson Leathers; daughter, Fran Davis and husband Jay of Watkinsville, and her children Ross and Grant Crowell; son, Ben Leathers and wife Lee of Milton, Georgia, and their children, Coleman and Bennett; and brother, Chester Leathers and wife Joanna of Gainesville, Florida, and their children. Also surviving are a sister-in-law Claire James of Athens; nieces Catherine Langley and husband Larry, of Charlotte, North Carolina, and their children Lauren and Stewart; Ashley Laney and husband Sterling of Greenville, South Carolina; and many cousins from the Leathers and Wells families. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law Carlton James.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 30 from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. at Bernstein Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, October 31 at 2:00 P.M. in Oconee Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1109, Athens, Georgia 30603, or Friends of Oconee Hill Cemetery, P.O. Box 49219, Athens, Georgia 30604.
