Obituary

Frederick George Ray, 76, of Costa Mesa, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, April 02, 2014. The eldest of four, he was born on October 17, 1937, to the late Frank and Julia (Moll) Ray in Flat Rock, MI. He moved with his family to Costa Mesa at the age of 11, where he grew up, and later married and raised his family. In 1961, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy, and although he only served 2 years before receiving an honorable discharge, he never stopped talking about the USS Ticonderoga, and his children often woke up to the sound of Reveille. A carpenter for 45 years, you couldn't drive very far without coming across a building he had worked on. He often volunteered his time and talents to the local Catholic churches, as well. If he heard they needed something built, he would build it. He was the same with his family and friends; he was beyond generous. Like St. George, he was our dragon slayer, always coming to the aid of those who needed him. He also enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening, trips to the hardware store, the movie Moonstruck (he could recite the entire thing), a good margarita, and a fun trip to Barona to gamble. He is preceded in death by his granddaughter, Julia Teresa Ray. He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Toni; his children, Tina (Mark) Longe, Michael (Rita) Ray, Julia Ray, Fred Ray; grandchildren, Ryan Longe, Sarah Longe, Jeremy Longe, Kenny Ray; siblings, Ruth Loth, Betty Kornock, Les Ray; and many nieces and nephews. He will be remembered for his kindness and great sense of humor. ¡A la Familia!

A Funeral mass will be held on Friday, April 11, 2014, at 10:00am at St. Joachim Catholic Church in Costa Mesa. A rosary will be said prior to the mass at 9:30am. Interment will be at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Orange. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Cross Catholic Outreach at www.crosscatholic.org
